For that price I think it's worth a bus ticket to Sydney...

get one day permit (or whatever they're called in NSW & Vic) and drive it home with no plates?

yeah i'd do that instead of doing on yourself, save you alot of money and then you can spend that money on some more stuff

to get a one day permit you need a pink slip, but provided it will pass / you can find a dodgy one, a one day permit is $18.
It's a better option, but if you want to expiriance the.. joys.. of a conversion, then go ahead. Can't beat value for money on the already converted one.

If the car's half decent, you *might* even be better off borrowing a trailer/sticking it on a truck

IF you decide to do the work yourself...
assuming the corona shares a similar engine bay to the RA celica
my advice is to get a set of 1GGE engine mounts... from where ever you can, i got mine of stradlater, these ones will fit on the front set of engine mounts, all you need to do, is file out the bottom front hole a bit, on the left mount. and cut the web on the right one with a hacksaw (not a angle grinder, cut thickness too big) and spread the mount apart a whisker.. 3 or 4mm at the cut... then weld it back up and chuck it on... (test it before you weld it)
that saves you modifying the mounts on the cross member... i've seen some pretty knarly looking x-member mounts...
we had the old engine in at brekky time, new one in before lunch... saves heaps of time
