1JZ-GTE TT Soarer Exhaust HELP Wed, 20 July 2005 13:46 Go to next message
Hey guys, i thought id give a post here ago, seems like some of you could help Very Happy

atm my 1993 TT 1JZ-GTE Soarer just has a stock twin exhaust.
Im looking to upgrade but am in a little bit of a pickle.

I was to keep a twin system, but do i either.

1. Replace the whole exhaust
2. Replace just the rear Muf's + Dump Pipes
3. New twin CAT Back exhausts + Dump Pipes
4. 2 or 3 without dump pipes

Money is always a factor, im looking for mainly a bit of grunt, stock exhaust is whisper quiet, dont want a window shattering sound, just something to beef it up. Also for value for money whats the best way of gaining a few KW's at the wheels, replacing the whole system would be the best obviously, but thinking of the money, can i get a nice gain from just dump pipes, muf etc. I think im set on the dump pipes, the stock ones are like T peices Confused

I was thinking an entire 3" system, then i thought of just the muf and the dump pipes for better value for money...... im really lost. Any fellow soarers out there if you have done something similar any help would be great.

You will find that the most gains will be made by replacing the stock Y section off the rear of the turbos with twin pipes...

I'd suggest the dumps and cat if your on a budget...

petespipes does twin pipes on this forum, might be worth talking to him Smile

Cheers
Wilbo

i would replace the whole lot.
save your pennies and get the whole lot done at once, it will save you money on labour.

the stock dumps are hideous things and they need to go if you want good power. the stock system is also pretty small and should be replaced. if you want to save money you could go for a single 3inch exhaust with a high flow muffler and high flow cat, instead of something like a 2.5" twin exhaust with 2 muffler and a cat.

ae95, any idea how much a whole twin system like that would cost?

I see your from WA, do you have any places in mind that could do a system like that for a good price. Im still looking for a good place in WA to do it, soon i think im going to have to just pick one out of the yellow pages.

wilbo666, when you say "dumps and cat" did you mean rear muf?
i never looked into replacing the cat. Is it worth replacing the cat with a high flow one? i didnt think it made much of a dif?

Whats a rear staneless muf cost? $300-$400? i need 2, dump pipes... another $400?.... If a whole system isnt much more expensive, performance wise it would probably be good. Im yet to get any quotes, still tossing up with what to do with my beast.

agreed with berad and AE95, do the whole lot in stainless steel, dumps included, if you dont have the cash right now, save some more untill you do, my car sounds awesome on full noise and isnt too loud, cant beat the noise of a turbocharged inline six Very Happy

I just replaced the rear mufflers with 2 stainless turbo Magnaflow 2 1/2 inch mufflers on my 91tt Very Happy
Sounded nice, not to noisy, and if you want you can do the rest of the exhaust at a later date.
Only prob I had and one of the reasons I sold it was it through out the air/fuel mixture and was blowing out black smoke every time I gave it some Confused
Just my thought on it

Yes MR1GGTE your tiny shaft is far superior. But with your super factory Y-pipe the force and volume of your load is compromised.

Stainless, who cares. Mild will do the jorb just fine at a fraction of the cost. Run seperate 3inch dump pipes into a single 4inch. 1J's love big open exhausts and it extends the life of the turbos.

Rex (not as big as MR1GGTE's tiny shaft)

REX has hit the nail on the head, better flow equals better power and longer turbo life.
Stainless mufflers will last longer. Will you keep the car long enough to gain?
Like Wilbo said its important to have a good flowing cat, they are often the restrictor in an otherwise adequate system.match that with mufflers of the straight through style in 3" for economy [price] and choice [variety] bigger is better for high performance but choice narrows and price increases.
getting a few quotes with advice from your more performance oriented exhaust shops will point you in the right direction.

You could always do what I did and go to the local exhaust shop, buy some mandrel bends and some straight pipe, a high flow muffler and some flanges and build it yourself. Nothing like a challenge and the satisfaction. My 1J Cressida still has that ugly cast "Y" piece, but 3" is a good compromise between cost, flow and clearance. (don't know about you guys but I HATE the car dragging)
