New engine + turbo not boosting :( Thu, 21 July 2005 06:44 Go to next message
Hi everyone

Finally got me new engine in.

Its A ST185 3SGTE. Using the stock GEN 2 3SGTE MR2 connections wiring etc has been cut and adapated. Motor runs

However the following has been found -

Sluggish bottom end/take offs.

No boost till later in the rev range - 4,000RPM+ and only hits .30BAR

The turbo is a CT20B off a GROUP A 205. The manifold had the extra fuel line bits. The CT20b was bolted onto the old GEN 2 manifold. And my old Wastegate Actuator was removed and placed (as the CT20B didnt have it) Could there be any wiring issues to why my car is so slow?

or could it be the actuator?

Any thoughts and help will be appreciated! the car is so freggin slow Sad

Man that sounds strange..

I knew someone who had a very bad low end but it was because his pistion rings were gone. If you say that the engine was just put in, then I doubt it. Was the timing done right? When my ST205 was put in, they did the timing wrong, and it was very laggy but it is hard to say as I have a different turbo too.

The CT20B shouldn't be a problem, as they are quite strong, just don't overboost it as if it blows, the you cannot repair it. Are you sure the Turbo was in good nice when you got it?

Anyways, I don't think it is the actual turbo. Sounds strange man.

Was the manifold and and turbo all bolted properly? No leaks?

im guessing its the actuator. it can be removed simply so it might be sticking open?

the turbo does boost till redline. but only minimal boost.

the seals and shaft play were perfect on this ct20b

well i took off the hose from the turbo to the wastegate actuator and it only did .58BAR boost max

i think the turbo is farked as it sounds like the turbo gets noiser during higher rev range

Well they are meant to get louder but not in the way you mention.

What are you going to do? Reco it? These turbos can be rebuilt, but not hi-flowed or upgraded. That turbo can do 1.1bar. Don't go over that. If you blow it, you gotta buy another one, because once you blow them, they can't be rebuilt. This is what I was told by a turbo house.

Let me know if you need someone who can do it or need a price?
