Ok, just wondering with time signatures what the top and bottom number specifically mean. I don't know for sure and what are all the different notes i.e. are there just 1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32?
Thanks
Troy

Hard for me to explain cause my knowledge is crap, but if the bottom number is '4' then you are working with 'crotchets'.

And the top number is then how many 'crotchets' you have per bar of music. So 3/4 timing is 3 crotchets per bar, 4/4 is 4 per bar etc.

7/8 timing is 7 half-crotchets per bar (is half-crotchet the right word? I can't even f****ng remember).

And there is more than just 1 1/2 etc.

For example a crotchet with a dot after it is like 1/4 + 1/8. (the dot means add an extra half of the original notes length).

Lol. Man I'm confused, thanks for your help. Still not fully understanding, like how can you have 3 crotchets to a 4 beat bar? Hmmmm. Any musos?
Thanks
Troy

sort of right

a 4 on the bottom means you're dealing with 1/4 of a "breve" per beat (or a crotchet). an 8 on the bottom means you're dealing with 1/8 of a "breve" per beat (or a quaver). a 16 on the bottom means semi-quaver, and so on.

The number on the top is the number of beats per bar. so 4/4 is 4 crotchet beats per bar. 3/4 is 3 crotchet beats per bar. 7/8 is 7 quaver beats per bar.

for cool time signatures (5/4, 15/16, 12/4, etc) classical music and progressive metal are your friends

I could have answered all of this in a heartbeat 10-15 years ago. Apparently it has all fallen out of my brain since then. How depressing. Sad

I know about Toyotas now though! Laughing

that sounds more like 10/8

quaver beats are often sounded out with an "a" when keeping time verbally.

"1 a 2 a 3 a 4 - 1 a 2 a 3 a 4" is a common way to count 7/8

7/8 is a bit of a pain for musically dumb ppl like me, Deliverance (the track) by Opeth is partly in 7/8 - gah!

I can't belive how few ppl pick Demon's Fall as a waltz tho Smile Heaviest waltz eva.
