Just wondering if u have to wear in LSD's again, if it hasnt been operating for a long period of time?

Reason why i say this is because it feels sum how different to before.

My 2-way LSD crunches at slow turns (sounds like a locked diff), i don't recall this happening before... is this "normal"?

Have i worn into it?
Did i bust it?
When do we need to change the oil?

yeah, the LSD in my bro's panda bunny hops at 'slower-aggressive-turns', i've always wondered if this was normal.

it's a TRD 2way.

Guess it was due for an oil change 6,000km's ago. Confused

Thanks dude.
Btw, what are the first signs of the LSD unit that is about to klonk on you then?

well mine started as a slight *dud dud dud dud dud* noise from the diff when driving on constant light throttle (ie freeway) then got progressively louder as it worsened and turned into a chunk chunk noise then into the sound of a jackhammer hitting on metal in the back of my car then BANG! dead...

I think you're missing a 0 there Garth - one of the reasons for the increased viscosity is increased service interval. As a general rule most manufacturers recommend changing fluids other than engine oils around 40 000Kms. Most anal retentives I know change about half that, and those with dedicated race cars usually change every 1000-2000Kms. What are you driving?

well i belive gearbox and diff oils should be changed as often as engine oils. they are only 'bathing' the components and arent strained or cleaned at any point when its being used (unlike engine oil) so it makes sense to clean it more often.

Gearbox and diff oil is fairly inexpensive and with the price of the AE86 and other older cars becoming more expensive, it only makes sense to try the hardest to keep it fresh.

Also, the use of the mechanical LSD creates lots of fine metal particles (from the clutch plates) and if they are removed frequently they will not attirbute to extra uneeded wear. There will be obviously more particles if the car is being drifted/tracked quite often.

put it this way, preserving the condition of $2500 worth of diff gear is worth changing the $50 diff oil every 1.5 months Smile

well thats my opinion. Smile

Or if you REALLY gave such baby love to your diff/gearbox, you could fit a pump, oil cooler and a filter.
