Building EFI systems. Sun, 24 July 2005 04:04 Go to next message
Im interested in finding out from anyone who has done it before, how do i build an EFI system?
am i eight in thinking that i could...say...use 4AGE parts to make an injected 2TC?, with custom plenum and piping of course.
If anyone has built an EFI system id like a brief step-by-step guide if possible. no need for great detail, just the basics.

Yeah a complete 4A-GE EFI system would probably work OK. The easiest way would be to get the 4A plenum and runners, cut off the mounting flange and weld on a 2T flange. Hopefully the port spacing is close enough to make this work. Then use all the 4A-GE injectors, sensors, AFM etc and it should run pretty much as well as a stock 4A-GE.

Of course the other option is to get a 2T-GEU which already has the EFI hardware in place. That's what I'd be doing before playing around with custom stuff.

as i'm still (after 1.5 years) doing this kind of thing (custom EFI on an 18Rt), can i suggest that you not fabricate your own intake & plenum unless you've got access to the tools/parts in your own workshop.

If it weren't for the money plowed into the head/cam/elves etc on my own car, i would have gone to 18rg+t or some other factory EFI setup.

Unless you're looking for massive flow requirements in the runners, plenum etc there's no great benefit in re-inventing the wheel.

In my case mixing non-cross-flow heads and high-mounted turbos has made it impossible to place injectors in a sensible spot.

having hosed all over your idea, can i suggest some light reading here:
<http://www.sdsefi.com/techinta.htm>
<http://www.sdsefi.com/air12.html>
Step by step guides for fabricating EIF for subaru & rotary 0 but the principles are universal.

plus i recommend this site simply because it makes sense to me:
<http://www.msefi.com/>
<http://www.msefi.com/msinfo/manual/mtabcon.htm>

also, for ECUs you'll probably need tunable unless migrating to something that's basically factory (e.g. Norbies suggestion of 2t-gue). Cost will be the detemining factor.

4AG = 16 valve = different port shape to 2TC = difficult (but not impossible) to fit.

I know it is not as nice as individual runners and a plenum but you could weld in injector bosses to the original 2TC manifold and use the lower section from a falcon XE/XF weber carby, on an adapter to your manifold. BTW the lower section houses the butterflies only and the original throttle linkage on the 2T carby should bolt onto the side of the falcon carby base.

thechuckster - someone must have made those manifolds as an aftermarket item for 18Rs at one stage because I have the exact same design Very Happy I know it wouldn't be ideal but surely you could mount your injectors on the engine side of the runners at a pretty steep angle? As the manifold gets pretty hot I think there would be minimal wall wetting and no noticeable difference in power... anyway just my opinion.

Of course if you like spending money you could go ITB's. DCOE-pattern throttle bodies are available from several manufacturers, and it's not hard to get a DCOE manifold for a 2T. Add injectors/sensors and you're done! Definitely not an option if you're on a budget though.
