alternator questions

i have pulled my alternator out (ae82 single cam) and changed it over the weekend. i dont know what happened but the charge light is on permanately. i thought possibly that the alternator (brand new bosch) was buggered or that i had forgotten to do the swing bolt up so i tightened the screw(it was loose) and took my battery out last night to charge it. The battery had full charge. So my new alternator is working but the charge light is staying on. Any ideas?

New alternator could be for volt gauge and not volt light.

ok so its a bosch alternator right? Apart from the main battery lead is the 1 wire pluged into the back, or is the 2 wire pluged into the regulator(same connector as a injector)?

charge light on = no charge
put a multi meter across the battery and check voltage while the motor is of and then when it is on
off = 12v
on = 14v approx
if its not 14v while the motors on the alt is not charging
make sure the plug on the back of the altenator is connected and the wire with the nut

If the alternator if for a volt guage (you know, the guage that goes from 0v to 18v on the dash that some cars have), and the dash has a volt light only, then the light will be on all the time.
Its happened on 2 mates cars.
Its an 'everything is ok' light.

Slowly make the car stall (put it in 4th, handbrake on, slowly release clutch)
If the light dims or turns off at low revs (300rpm) then its become an 'everything is ok' light.

because he does not know what he is talking about. You can have a volt meter in any car, and all modern cars have a alternator warning light regardless of voltmeter. The alternator actually requires the light to switch itself on.

but if it is wired for a voltmeter it would be providing constant 12v to the light instead of a guage, so his car (ae82 which has a light not guage) might have a alternator that is intended for use with a volt meter.
i do not no if they run different systems and all the specifics so i apologise if im wrong, just the way i take it is some alternators have a switch or similar that turns on/off when the voltage is below or above a certain point which then goes to the batt. light, and those with volt meters just have the voltage displayed.

ok i ran the car last night for about 3 hours with the lights on, i had no problems with charge. the 12v and 14v thingy was right so the alternator is definately charging. The single plug is plugged in at the back of the alternator. The other wire with the nut was a little lose but was still on. I tightened that and went out for another drive. Still i have the warning light on. WTF? i dont get it.

it's very very simple.
basically the alternator is obvoiusly diferent to the one previously in the car and this is the reason why the light stays on.
the alternator is probably out of a car such as an ae92 sx which comes with a voltmeter gauge and the alternator constantly supplies a current to the gauge to make it operate and give a reading.
however because the alternator is now in a different car, the wire in the alternator that sends the current for the volts gauge now goes to a charge light hence the reason why it stays on.
the alternator previously in the car would have a thing inside it that would send a current to the light when the alternator or battery was failing but it sends a constant light beacuse the alternator is different.
if anyone cannot understand this then do a search for the cars wiring diagrams, both the ones for the new alternators owners model and the current car for which the alternator is in and basically follow the wires.

So AE92 sx corolla's don't have a warning light as well as a gauge?
A volt meter measures the voltage of the battery and has no effect on wether the alternator will charge or not. The volt meter is connected generally to an ignition supply and the only connection they have with the alternator is from the alternators main battery connection.
I have never seen an alternator with a special terminal for a volt meter.
The way the warning light works is as follows.
Power goes through the warning light to the warning light terminal on the alternator. When the alternator is not charging (before you start the engine) it provides an earth to turn on the warning light. When you start your car and the alternator starts to spin, it uses the power from the warning light to start the alternator charging. When it starts charging it puts power back up the warning light wire to the warning light which turns the light off.
Kdogg: does the warning light come on before you start the engine? If not check your fuses.

BradW is spot on. When the light is on while driving does it get brighter with revs, is it dim or look normal?
I suspect the rectifier or the regulator is probably playing up inside the alternator

ok now it is completely fucked up. i hop in the car this morning, and the charge light comes on when i turn the ignition on but i have no other power. the auxillaries in my car have gone and the battery again has no power WTF?
when i drive it doesnt get brighter and it doesnt dull. it just stays looking normal. i guess a trip to the electrician is next.

it wasnt just one Major problem. There was 4 minor problems. the alternator tension bracket had broken, so even though the nut was tight the bracket was still moving. The belt had a tiny little crack in it so it wasnt running smoothly across the pulleys. Hidden in the wiring was a second plug which had to piggy back the first plug (when i connected this the charge light dimmed and went out) and the fuse link box on the positive battery terminal had blown.
