ST205 gearbox and all 3 differentials take API GL5 75W/90 "Manual" gear oil.
The same as the ST185 and I would also assume the ST165.

Re: Recommened ST205 Gearbox Oil, other shift problems?

I tried a couple of things over the weekend:
1. As advised by Justen, I dropped the existing fluid (Penrite 75/90 full synthetic) and replaced it with Dexron III. However, this made the shifting even harder when cold, and was not much better when warm. So I'll be dropping this stuff and going back to full synth, perhaps another brand?
2. The problem is that it's very difficult to shift into 3rd and 5th gears, and down into 2nd. Attempting to shift without double clutching is almost impossible. I find that reving it in neutral when shifting up can sometimes be the only way to get into 5th and 3rd gears. Forcing it really feels like I'm going to break something.
I'll be checking the shifter cables for kinks this weekend.
Here are some thoughts:
- Syncro problem? However the shifting sometimes works perfect when shifting into and down. It almost feels like the gears are not linked properly and just jams the shift. Wouldn't syncro wear present itself all the time? (like it did in my old 185)
I've yet to come accross a broken ST205 box. I don't believe this one is anywhere near 100k.
The clutch is a twin plate, with low K's, and takes a bit of leg muscle to engage.
Ideas anyone?

sounds like syncros to me - youll be hard pressed killing the gearing in those things - not even with the power the white ones capable of.
I had similar feel issues with my old st185 box - though it was a bit easier when things warmed up
ST205 box i dont have any issues with so far

OK.
I just find it hard to believe that the syncros on 205 box would last far less than a 185 box.

Depends on the usage quite a bit too Zasa ..
Was the white ones box a second hand or new one ? I know my box has at least 75 thousand KM on it.
heard about that redline stuff too as mentioned - may be an otopin to look at

I'll have a look for the redline stuff.
The box was second hand.
Justen reckons it was fine until he got the clutch put in. After that, things started to get a little stiff, and it's gradually worsened.

Try Castrol Transmax Z, full synthetic which is must better than Dexron III. We were having the same problem with a LSD GZE box which are very similar and this was the fix. With the penrite, it also kept blowing the seals due to the upgraded oil pump.
