you could use a hammer but you will more than likely make a mess of it as it needs a fair anount of wacking{sorry to get technical}to get them in, one slip and you will say bye bye to threads. best bet to save money is to put the car safely on stands, and take the hubs of yourself{if you know how?)and get a mechanic or engeneering place to press them in.
can be done with hammer and the right size metal tubes.but i speak from experiance.i had to change a couple of broken stud's on a racecar and was away from the workshop at the track.got the old ones out,got four in and was halfway with the 5th and it slipped when i hit it and stuffed all the threads.pain had to do it all over again.

Why hammer them back in?
Hammer the buggers out for sure but then just use an appropriately sized wheel nut and spanner to pull them back in.

I sometimes use a press because I've got one, but otherwise a hammer, used with some CARE, is fine. Usually to pull them in I tap them a little bit from behind, pull in with an old wheelnut (rattlegun means this only takes a second, long as you're careful), then check with socket+breaker bar. Don't just grab a hammer and randomly belt everything in sight though.

yea..... makes sense, cheers.
I was researching the other day and came across these "stud extensions":

has anyone ever used these before? How do they go on, and are they easier than replacing the whole stud??

just get longer studs.standard stud length is fine unless you are doing a bit of track work, or the standard ones are to short for a rim type.
