Resetting the Toyota ECU Sat, 14 December 2002 08:14 Go to next message
It's been well documented on this and other forums that the Toyota ECU "learns" and that any mods to the air fuel ratios (i.e. through AFC's and other interceptors) are eventually dialled out so that you end up running too rich again.

Occasionally by resetting it (removing the EFI fuse) you go back to your original leaner tune.

1. Does the ECU change open loop maps? (Mine feels like it does, but I don't have dyno evidence)

2. If you leave your tuning adjustments for open loop / high in the RPM range / at high throttle settings, will your adjustments be more durable?

3. Does re-booting it all the time damage the ECU?

4. How often do you reset the ECU? What is your recommended methods?

I know that ultimately the best solution is full aftermarket management, but for various reasons lots of us don't have this capability.

Step right up and put your 2cents in!

The ECU doesn't change the open loop maps. Thats why they are open loop, it doesn't adjust these mapping values.

Yes i think your better off to make your changes in the open loop areas like on boost. This is where you will see the most gains in terms of power. Closed loop areas you arn't making any real power and they are closed loop for fuel economy and emissions and are best left to what toyota has already setup.
Generally leaning off the af ratios at full sing is required. Giving some aditional advance provided no detonation will occur will give you fists full of power Smile

Re-booting wont damage the ECU at all. Do it a million times, it wont affect it.

Reset the ecu after changes like exhaust, pod filter etc. After you have had a problem, the engine light has come on and you have definitly rectified the problem. You dont want it storing faults that you know are already fixed.

To reset just remove the negative or positive battery terminal for 30 secs then put it back on.

Just in case, people with security coded factory stereo's may not want to remove the negative terminal for thirty seconds....

Unless they know the unlock code.

Pulling the EFI/ECU fuse will achieve the same purpose without removing the battery connections.
