It will have come from an early 80's Toyota of some description - likely a Celica, Carina or Corona.

Hi,
It's a 2litre 4cyl fuel-injected DOHC engine. It came out in the mid 70's and was in Celicas and Coronas. Maybe in a couple of other models also. I think the 18RGEU went into the RA23, RA28, RA29 and RA35 models. It was in the GT/GTv variants of the aforementioned vehicles. I also beleive this engine was in the RA40 and the model that followed it, whatever that model was called. Again, it was in the GT/GTv (assuming the RA40 and its successor came with the GTv version).
The 18RGEU was the last of the production 18RG engines. It had larger valves and better head design than the previous 18RG engines, but it needed it to regain lost power due to the anti-pollution gear and lower compression ratio. The "U" stands for lower compression (ie takes lower octane fuel) and the "E" stands for EFI. 18R is the model/type of engine and the "G" signifies twin cam.
The 18RG generated 145bhp. The 18RGR generated 140bhp. The 18RGU generated 120bhp and the 18RGUE generated 130bhp. These are approx bhp figures and the engines presented in order of build (ie the 18RG was the earliest version and the 18RGEU was the last).
The 18RGEU is a good engine to turbo due to the lower compression ratio and EFI.
When built your 1972 TA22 Celica would of had a 1.6ltr 2T engine (approx 102bhp). The GT version of your car would of had the 2TG, which is a 1.6ltr version (sort of) of the 18RG. The 2TG generated approx 120-112bhp, depending upon the model engine, compression ration, smog gear etc.
Hope this helps. If I've made a boo-boo or left anything out I'm sure the more knowledgable folk in these forums will correct me.

True in Australia, but he's from Finland. Chances are he has an RA20/RA21.

AFAIK the only celica to have received the 18R-GEU was the RA65, pls correct me if im wrong.
THe 18R-GEU wasnt released until ~1983 i think, and was available in the Celica, Carina and maybe Corona.

ehh, Finland, eh? I knew that Norbie. I was just testing you
Not sure about the RA20, but the RA21-MQ had the 18RG and the RA21-MQR had the 18RG-R. This is circa 1974/75. I don't think the 18RGEU engine was available at that time - it came later.
In regards to Witzl's reply, I was under the impression the 18RGEU came out in the RA28 series. I'm sure the RA35 had it, but then again I may be wrong.

No way did the RA28 get an EFI engine. It was not released until the xA6x era, ie RA63 Celica.

Hi,
The later-build RA25 (1974-1975) had EFI, so I would assume the RA28 would of had it also, being a later model vehicle.
