Haven't been to a Vietnamese wedding, I've worked quite a few Chinese ones though and seem to share some similarities. I think your standard suit and tie will suffice as far as your dress code goes.

It is customary for money gifts (cheque is more traditional) to be given inside a wedding card, this is usually done when the Bride, Groom and their parents come to the table to say thanks to all the guests. I think someone on the table usually gives their blessing, but hopefully you won't be the oldest on the table so you don't have to worry!

Hope this helps! Smile

Well, I'm Vietnamese and I got married 3 months ago... So... Smile

I'm assuming that you're only going to the recption and not the tea ceremony. Smile

Dress: Suit
Gift: Varies depending on how well you know them. Start at $100 in a red packet (or an envelope if you don't have access to a red packet). Close friends will give $150 and onwards. Family usually starts at $300 upward.

Oh, and learn to cha cha. Nod

ah viet wedding... gunna b some hunnis there lol.....
I have a secret obsessin with viet nail salon gurls muhaha...

Anyways, I do know that at some point in ceremony they introduce the brides family and grooms family to each otha. My friend was friends with the famly members of both the bride and groom, and all his friends stood up, he had no idea what was going on so he stood up and followed....... owned....
Dont do it if u dont wanna look stupid...

And yea the funds as a gift is pretty customary across all asian cultures.
Just dress tidy, be polite around and under the eye of the elders (well just dont be a loud drunken fool)... and have fun.

yeah very similar to chinese custom..

but dont wear a white suit. that symbolises death and isnt really appropriate for a wedding..

oh and you better build up your alcohol tolerance before then because if theyre rich enough you might have a shitload of xo/vsop cognac to get through.. as well as practice strummin ur windpipes because karaoke is a usual happening.. Smile

Just wear suits, formal clothing.
Red pocket/envelope are the ones used in Chinese New Year, they just mean good luck.
They dont sell them in small amounts, they sell at about 30-50 envelopes a pack?
If you'll only need one then might as well ask an asian freind to lend you one.
No point in buying a pack of 30-50 if you wont be using them all.

No. There are specific red packets for weddings. They have the "double happiness" character on them in various designs.

Cabra bargain shops will sell them individually.

Be prepared to feel uncomfortable and listen to very dodgy singing by the paid singers, especially 80's songs (or maybe chart songs now?)! And usually they'll present in Vietnamese, followed by a translation in broken English.

I ONGLY LUB YOOH LONG TIME

And the cake wouldn't be that nice either. And if you're in Carlamatta you better pray to god you got an alarm and/or club lock.
