I usually hit all my chrome bits with polish.
Start with just polish, not cut.
If that doesn't work, try cut.
If that doesn't work, try AutoSol or Mothers.
Just remember chrome is a plating that can wear off.

If we use any checker plate on light commercial vehicle bodies at work its not a chrome mild steel item as the price of that would be way through the roof (thats if you can even buy it off the shelf), i think you will find that the checker plate is actually polished aluminuim and depending on how worn the item is will depend on if autosol will do the trick or it might need to be taken with a polishing machine, mop and cutters to bring a high luster finish. This sort of job would best be left to the pros if your after a schmick finish but will be $$$

Autosol will do fine if its already been polished, looks like it has from the pic.
But a defect will be on the way for sure, you'll blind other motorists with that whole thing in mirror finish.

Apparently, according to the people at Mythbuster, coke works better then general chrome cleaner. They tested it too, hehe worked fine. But you'll have to wash off the stickyness after haha, be worth a try. Much cheaper
