Fitting Gauges on - 3SGTE motors Fri, 29 July 2005 13:48 Go to next message
While the car is still in the shop being rebuilt.

After having an argument with a local autobarn (I wanted a water temp gauge that does atleast 20/40* he claimed that engines will never run that low they can get upto 240Degs so I told him thats the stupidest thing i've ever heard.) I've realised that it would be good to invest in some to monitor the mr2.

Im looking at fitting the following white autometer face gauge(s):
- Water temp (120-240F)
- Oil Temp

Is a oil pressure necessary? My old engine blew due to the bottom end + over heating problems. (Turbo oil feed line started to block up)

I'm only trying to get whats essential to minimise the clutter.

Also who has fitted them onto the 3SGTE? how did you route them? Via the Oil cooler adaptor? (I dont think mine has an Oil cooler adaptor..) Could the oil temp sensor be fitted to the sump plug with a suite fitting?

I was under the impression that engines usually run between 80*c and 100*c?

You can just replace the oil pressure switch in the head with a pressure sender an hook that up to a gauge.

I'm not 100% sure, but i suspect that the Gen 3 3S blocks have a oil temp switch mounted on the back of the block up near the coolant drain plug. I noticed that our 1997 Rav4 (3SFE) has an oil temperature warning light, so i'm guessing that my motor has one too as they are the same generation. Can anyone confirm? If they do it should be a simple matter of swapping the switch for a temp sender.

Cheers!

Yeah I was thinking of replacing that switch. Since my low oil level light doesn't work I think anyway.

I've got a GEN 2 3S motor and yes Motors should run no more then 95*C nominal (below boiling point) but autometer gauges are American so they display Farenheight.

Personally, the only gauge you really need is Oil Pressure. Water Temp you have the stock gauge (albeit it isn't that accurate, its enough to see if your overheating or not).

Oil pressure gauge actually acts as 2 gauges. Nominal pressure is fairly evvident once the oil has warmed up. If the oil overheats, oilpressure will start to go down. Its as simple as that.

As to where to mount them. Get at 1/8"BPST tee piece adapter from VDO. this will allow you to mount the oil pressure sender where the stock oil pressure switch is.

The Oil temp sender, you can drill out and tap the sump plug. And put it in there.

The Water temp sender is much the same, drill out and tap a hole in the water junction. Or make a nice little adapter piece which fits in the top radiator hose. You can buy the blitz pieces for around $30 (importbitz have em).

I dont' know if they sold me the wrong one, but that 1/8" VDO 2 way adaptor wouldn't screw into the head on my car. The thread on it was about 1mm wider in diameter than the original sender.
