ST185 GT4 Celica Tyre Sizings Sat, 30 July 2005 14:30 Go to next message
I'm toying with the idea of stepping up the tyre's rolling diameter for my ST185 to the later model ST205 size of 621.4mm (215/50/16). I realise there are factors such as offset and vehicle height to consider, but has anyone also stepped up the size on their tyre size and what were the effects as far as rubbing on the body or suspension were concerned? My main reason for wanting to do this is the interchangability it will give me between about 5 sets of rims for either of my GT4's, and the availability of better tyre sizes to suit my application.

Stock ST185 tyres are 215/50-15 I believe.
I have run 215/40-17's and 215/45-17's with no probs.
I only ran the 215/45-17's very short term as they are a considerably larger rolling diameter than standard.

Clint...in Canberra, there's a guy running an ST185 Group A with the ST205 16" standard wheels...apart from the normal 185 offset issues, they fit fine. I don't think he's even reported too many speedo issues either, although I haven't quizzed him.

Car looks reasonable in my opinion...factory wheels look good.

Does anyone know what the correct offset for the ST185 is?

I am looking at a set of 17" x 7" for my Group A. Assume that 245/40/17 would be the correct tyre size?

BlackGT4 - the question about the best tyres is a bit like "How long is a piece of string?" It really depends on how much you want to spend and what sort of characteristics you are looking for in your tyres (eg. dry grip, wet grip, quietness, long life, ride quality). The tyre shops should be able to advise you but you need to be wary of their 'brand loyalty' - you would probably want to ask a few different dealers.

*edit* Forget my first question guys - I found the info.

5x100pcd with 38mm offset.

245/40/R17 might be pushin it for diameter on the fronts depends what offset u get though. My rims have 215/40/R17 and scrubs sometimes (my suspesion is gettin pretty old though) but they have a bit of dish on them.

Do you know what offset your wheels are? 215mm is pretty narrow to be scrubbing!

Yeah tell me about it Confused Not sure what the offset is though ? is there a standard spot on wheels where it tells u the offset ? Also it only scrubs because the front springs bounce because of shit suspension and its only the front rear have heaps of room.
