smallport head onto 20v block Tue, 02 August 2005 10:24 Go to next message
i wish to fit a smallport head to a 20v block that has been fitted with gze pistons, so the valve relifs should be in the right place. i have lined the two head gaskets up and it all looks to line up. has anyone done this before and can tell me if there are any problems i havent thought of?

ohh the other problem is the smallport heads external oil drain, can i just weld a fitting into the sump and conect it there?

p.s. i searched, but only to find info for ppl putting 20v heads onto smallport blocks.

Hi cri_ag

My current setup is a smallport head with blacktop bottom end and Wiseco pistons. I had to block the oil drain in the head. I'd recommend using a silvertop bottom end as the tensioner, oil pump and covers line up correctly. The blacktop bottom end has a silicon tensioner which means you'll have problems fitting the front covers.

Also if this is a RWD configuration, be careful when bolting on the gearbox support brackets. I broke a piece off mine because the bolt holes weren't the correct height. Doh!

Hope this helps!

thanks heaps for that dori-kin, whats the best way to determine if i have a silver top block or a black top block? by the tensioner like you mentioned?
i want to do this as i have a 20v block thats been o-ringed and fitted with forgies, reason enough for you?

youd be happer with a 20v head unless you have a worked 16v head.20v heads are not very expensive.

cri_ag: I think the timing belt tensioner is the easiest way to tell between blacktop and silvertop blocks. The silvertop has a spring tensioned bearing whereas the blacktop has a silicon tensioner (cylindrical tube with pin sticking out of it)

kingmick: I used the blacktop bottom end because I got it for cheap, blacktop crankshafts were machined to tighter tolerances and the conrods are much lighter (compared to smallport 100kw.) It's also much more work adapting a 20V head for RWD configuration (water lines etc.) whereas smallport is pretty much plug 'n play.

thanks again dori-kin i will have a closer look at my block to determine which i have.

i dont want a 20v head because as dori-kin mentioned, i dont want the hasles accociated with the distributor and water lines. also the block has been fitted with the gze 16v pistons so the valve relifs are incorrect for a 20v. 20v heads may be cheap but the throtles and other accociated gear to make them work are not.
i have the 100kw head and manifold and have already modified the manifold to suit, i would rather work with what i have got than create more problems for myself.
