The japs love to do it. Every imported engine bar none I have seen have had this done
Probably something to do with hot weather and then extreme cold making the thermostat fail. So why replace it with something that will fail again when you can remove the problem?

Looks like a thermostat...and if so, my 1JZ had the same thing done to it!

Took a while to figure out why the car used so much fuel and took forever to get up to operating temperature!

But why would a hollowed thermostate stuff a cylinder? I would htink it would just take ages to warm up.
BTW my 1jz thermostat is very nice

Well we brought in over 12 GT4 cuts last year, a few Starlet GT's and misc other things and every single one had the guts cut out of the thermostat.
I guess it could of been the truck driver who delivered them
