The japs love to do it. Every imported engine bar none I have seen have had this done Confused
Probably something to do with hot weather and then extreme cold making the thermostat fail. So why replace it with something that will fail again when you can remove the problem?

So its common practice in Japan? Damn, thats new to me, especially having owned a Supra and EP82 Starlet in the past.

Took a while to figure out why the car used so much fuel and took forever to get up to operating temperature!

But why would a hollowed thermostate stuff a cylinder? I would htink it would just take ages to warm up.

Well we brought in over 12 GT4 cuts last year, a few Starlet GT's and misc other things and every single one had the guts cut out of the thermostat.
