I got mine from an electrical wholesaler. I just grabbed the thickest stuff they had in stock, which as it turns out is about twice as thick as I really need, but at least I don't have to worry about voltage drop.

Amplifier cable is idea -- but bloody expensive... look around 2 awg (hypo cars) or 4awg (for a normal car), the more copper strands in the cable itself the better.

Any welding supply shop will have a wide selection of big cables at a fairly good price. Have you got a local BOC?

Welding cable will have a greater volt drop than proper power cable.
I'd used 4gauge as minimum, 2guage if you can.
That said I had 4guage for my 1UZ Cressida, and it was fine.
It was a 550cca battery, and I had earths coming out the wahzoo.

Ok, I found that the "BOC" website has an outlet locator. I'll try some of their local outlets.
smallest "welding flex" on the BOC site is 16mm, even that would seem like a pretty thick diameter. I guess I'll see whats there when I find an outlet.
cheers.

Which leads to greater resistance, which inturn leads to greater volt drop.

low copper strand count? Fuck me, my double insultated welding cable has that many damn strands I keep pricking myself whenever I touch the stuff. Plus the guy put the fittings on it for free for me and even let me borrow the tool to take home and crimp myself.

yep welding cable is the go. not only does it have a shitload of tiny copper wires despite what some people are saying, it also has double insulation. well thats how mine is anyway, i bought it from BOC in minto.

Welding cable here - big thick bastard with millions of fine copper wire core - $ 9 per meter here a bit dearer for the country i guess
So far so good - excellent to work with and very satisfying results

some welding wire is fukt
it looks thickfrom outside but inside its half the size
it has 2 insulating layers and fuk all wire
i always keep the thickest in stock
its not very flexible but its the best
amp wire is ok but not the best its good that its flexible
the stuff i have is like 8 to 10 bucks a metre

Not having a good enough earth from battery to body in the boot, and from the block to the body up the front, will result in poor performance.

don't go any of these pissy-arse measures.
0ga from +ve to engine bay, 00ga for an earth cable (actually, that's totally overkill on my part)
seriously, any electrical wholesaler should have 2ga cable and appropriate fittings (and fuses - FUSE IT CLOSE TO THE BATTERY!). just measure up what you need, add a bit, then go to them and get it done.

I dropped into Jaycar since I was going past, and found they have 2g for $13 a metre, and 4g for $6 per metre.
I'll try BOC when I get the chance. I think I'll go with the welding cable - sounds like it'l be cheaper and tougher. The 4g I saw seemed a little thin.
thanks for the reminder to use a fuse too. But, um if my odyssey battery says it has 680 CCA whats the lowest rated fuse that could be used?

Get a circuit breaker, much better than a fuse. I think mine is a 150A unit.

circuit breaker is indeed better.. depends on how often you plan to accidentally ground your main power cable
somewhere in the range of 150-250A

I did it once, but unfortunately it was the short length of cable between the battery and the circuit breaker. It was like a fireworks show in the back of my car. Scared the living crap out of me!

I use the welding stuff from my local tool shop - $3/metre, plenty heavy enough, double insulated, and heaps of strands. Even with very long runs, and heaps of cranking over grumpy engines, it doesn't get hot. Plus it looks dead sexy in orange, too

I got my cable from BOC. Its the 25mm stuff. The guy said it was rated at 200amps. Now I gotta get on with routing it through the car.
