I was wondering if anyone out there can help me diagnose my prob
Everytime i start up my car i hear a clunk/thump. I sounds like it's comming from somewhere around the gearbox. It only happens once, as soon as the engine gets it's first real spark and is worse when the engine is cold. I was thinking it could be an engine mount which is causeing then engine to knock on the fire wall but then that just sounds stupid when u think logically. When i was searching for the problem i was listening to all the different rattles and when i got to the back of the car i found my next problem. The weld which holds the exhaust to the muffler had broken and my muffler was just hangine on. Can anyone tell me if this is illegal if i take the muffler off and just have the 2" pipe. It's got a cat and resinator infront of it.

sorry for the long post
cheers mike,

P.S. the car is an RT142 corona

Removing the muffler may not in itself be illegal, but driving a car that's loud enough to wake the dead certainly is.

it seems to me that this only happens when you turn the key to start, it sounds very much like something to do with the starter motor. Could be that the starter motor bolts are not tightened sufficiently, do you know where the starter motor is? If so just have a feel and see if it is loose...
