Sprinter master cylinder upgrade Tue, 17 December 2002 02:58 Go to next message
For those of you that are doing a brake conversion on a Sprinter that need a 15/16 master cylinder, one off a mitsubishi starion fits with the only mods being the front pipe. EASY HAH. Part number JB 1535.

Hi Damo,

I used one of a FJ40 (I think) series landcruiser, which bolted stright up and is quite a bit larger. I will have the part number shortly.

Cheers.

Hey Paul, isn't 7/8 smaller than 15/16. Imperial measurements are not my strong point. It was $200 new by the way.

I got my master cylinder rebored to a 15/16 and it cost me $175. Although, now i have to press the brake pedal harder for it to stop!

Is that to be expected??

Reading Bill Sherwoods site, he says that is normal. I haven't been able to test mine as yet.

are these mods for the carona/pug/hilux upgrade? do the bolt straight up to the booster? do the brake pipes match up?

EVOSTi, this is the setup that we are putting on a friends Sprinter this weekend and this is the master cylinder we are using. The brake pipe that goes to the back brakes stays the same and the front needs a new pipe to be made. Very easy. Check clearances on actuator and your done. I checked out one off a fj40, which I don't know if there are different types but it had four bolt holes, not two. Another cylinder I think will fit which is 7/8 is one off a corona (part no. JB1335(I think)).

Damn, I spent a while looking round various wreckers trying to find one that would fit with no luck. Have to look into that starion idea though, sounds good. And yeah, bigger master cylinder will make the pedal harder, I love a hard pedal, thats why I want to do it.

I'm only told it's off a Starion from the part number. I went through a heap of masters, found the one I wanted and then asked the guy what it was off. Go by the part number to be safe.

Hello all,

I have used the landcruiser one which has had two more holes drilled in the base to mate up to the booster - no big deal there. Still trying to find the part number I used on that as I tossed the box (I know, silly... Embarassed ).

7/8s is the same as 14/16s mathematically speaking. However a original Sprinter/Corolla master cylinder bored out to 15/16s (only a phraze in it) will have flex problems as the walls of the master cylinder will be thinner.

The Landcruiser one is heaps fatter than the original and required that the lines be shortened a little (and re-flared) so alignment was correct where they are bolted to the front and side of the M/C.

Pedal is quite firm, but better than a softy!

Cheers.

The part number for the FJ40 landcruiser paul is JB 1526. That's quite a lot cheaper ($80) but I wasn't comfortable in drilling holes to line up because the material is not as thick as the outside edge. Not having a go at your setup, it sounds good.
