chain guide material Tue, 17 December 2002 04:42 Go to next message
does anyone know what kind of material chain guides have on them? It looks like a hard compound rubber to me but it's hard to tell with the guids being so old. I have a few places lined up that can make em for me, just need to know what the stuff is. If no one knows, anyone got any ideas on what else I could use in it's place.

I'd imagine he's talking about the 18R-GU in his car. I'm guessing he didn't have any luck finding someone with the guides earlier.

Try Dotmar PBE plastics over Macuquarie way in sydney. They have plastics for just about everything. Self lubricating, high temp etc. I have no affillication but used their product in designs for fire fighting appliances. They can supply only or turn up to design.

Yes, the timing chain guides in the 18r-gu. I really need the car back so instead of waiting for a set to turn up i'm going to attempt to get some made. As a last resort I will get some new ones Sad but lets hope that doesn't have to happen. Thanks for the hint clubagreenie, PBE plastics will get a call tommorow.

dude.. let me know how you go and what sort of price they might be asking. I live not far from macquarie in sydney so if they need someone to walk in i might be able to help!
Im interested since i might also need these parts when i get around to fixing up my 18R-GU

thanks for the offer. I've spoken to some engineers here at work who are well into cars and they think that the guides should be fine for a while yet so i'm putting them back. For anyone in need of new chain guides, I've been told neoprene or similar would work and you can get it in two tubes of chemical that you mix together, put some boxing around it so it stays on the guide and pour it in. Then you have to level it all off later with a grinder or something so it's all the same height and smooth. Hope this helps someone cause it took me a lot of time calling people to find that out.

DUDE!!

before you go putting your engine back together! i have the genuine Toyota 18R (incl 18R-G) repair manual sitting right next to me here. It has the maximum wear measurements for the chain guides, so if u want the info.. let me know!

i've got one of them. I think there is plenty of meat on them, they were just starting to get a little bit hard and i was worried they were going to crumble but these guys think they should be fine.
