1JZ to W5x gearbox? can it be done? Tue, 04 June 2002 04:48 Go to next message
I seen the conversion that they did on the ZOOM 240Z, but all that stuffing around woul dhave to cost more than the appropraite gearbox, especially after you factor in the purchase of the W5x gearbox.

The donor car has a W5? (2wd hilux) already, be good if it could be adapted to that. Better if i could get a R154(?) tho...

Ultimately a R154 would be the best bet. You can use the bellhousing from a 2JZGE which used a W58. Or I'm sure you could get one from Dellow or someone else like that.

IC,

that might be the best option as a r154 is like rocking horse shit.....but then I would need flywheel/clutch etc etc...

whats a decent price for a bare motor these days?

the thoughts of a 350hp mini truck is quite inviting Smile

This is the exact dillema I am in now.

I have a 1JZ but no flywheel,clutch or gearbox

I can get a 1GGTE W58 for $600, or an R154 for $1100 bucks.

Im thinking that at that price, the R154 is the best bet.

Yes it can.

You need to get all the manual stuff from a 2JZGE (flywheel, slave, fork, thrust bearing carrier, clutch kit, W5x box and bellhousing to suit JZ-W5x box). Sounds easy but less than 5% of all 2JZGEs were in manual form. Good luck!

Alternatively a whole kit (excluding gearbox)can be purchased from Dellow or Castlemaine Rod Shop for around the 1K mark. Or you could custom fabricate something from the auto bellhousing and the bellhousing on your W5x (ie a cut and shut job).

Dellow will provide you with a fat ass 14 kg flywheel, a Holden 1 tonner pressure plate and custom 9.5" clutch plate. Jeff Dellow said he wouldn't be prepared to lighten the flywheel to less than 12 kg. That is effing heavy. Don't know about the CRS kit. The std Toyota 2JZGE flywheel weighs 8-9 kg (bathroom scales) and utilises a 240 mm clutch (same as the 7MGE). The chromemoly one I had made weighs 6kg.

The price figure is ballpark - I roughly added the prices on the pricelist I had (and now can't find). I suggest you ring the respective companies. Dellow will send you a pricelist but their customer service leaves a little to be desired according to some (but my experience with them has been OK). Not sure about the CRS one entirely but RH suggested around "$1000".

well
that uses up the entire "$1000" that I'd allowed for extras in my conversion Razz I'm hoping that includes a bellhousing.

could it really cost much more than that to simply get the tranny tunnel widened for a r154?

and for that extra $1000, you could purchase yourself a 2jz front cut.
although I suppose if you were going to use that kit, you could grab an auto 1jz front cut

So if you have a normal W5x behind say a 7M, 5M ect what would you have to do to bolt a 1J to it?

Cheers

i bolted my 1JZ to a W58 on sat and it fitted like a dream
i biought the gearbox/flywheel/clutch/bellhousing/starter off a 2JZ GE motor at jap auto performance it was 500 bucks for the lot and it just so happened to have a 550 pound pressure plate in it so 1 clutch plate later it all works,
why dont you just do that, and that price is steep for that box i can get you a W58 of a 1GGTE for 350 or if i see a JZGE around with a manual ill let you know

Yeah I got a 2JZ-GE box as well (sounds like I got ripped though, $850 just for the box). This is definitely the one to have, as it has a bigger input shaft bearing compared to the earlier W58's as found behind 5M's and 7M's. Apparently this addresses one of their major weaknesses (ie snapped input shafts).

Hey JAZE, I'm looking for a supra 5 spd at the moment, I'd be very interested in getting a W58 for a price like that.

Where do I line up?
