Help with rim size etc for celica

Hey Guys,
How do I go about getting some second hand rims for the silly car ? I want more grip i.e. wider and bigger... say 16's or 17's
Would I be looking to get 17x7 or 17x7.5..... and in 16's too, what would I be looking to get... I might prefer 16's as semi slicks would be cheaper in 16's than 17's am I not correct ?
So yeah and can someone explain to me re "spacers" and "offset" ?
I always just thought.. 4 nuts.. buy rims with 4 holes !
if i am incorrect please explain to me... what size are the celica supra rims ? will they fit ok ? (they otta be bigger than 14's !? haha

Les,
Theres not alot of options for the RWD 4 Stud these days. Before you buy any tho take a good read over the Wheel and rim guidleins on the RTA websight. They have quite a few restrictions in terms on increased sizes !
And wheel spacers I beleive are illegal !

Not just any 4 x 114.3 rim will fit. You have to make sure they have correct offset, probably best is to wait till Nark gets back.
His rims are 17 x 7.5 and are the correct offset too. Every year he takes his over the pits (like u all have to...haha) but I think the time before last he swapped his old rims on...and this time...he found someone who would turn a blind eye...
Dont quote me on that, my memory is BAD!

You are such a post h00r!!! Splitting up everything into multiple posts!
Yeah, dont you guys have to have vehicle inspections every year in NSW? He just drove around with the 17's and then swapped 'em for stockers for the inspection.
As for the spacing, of course there is variation. I think its Corollas? that have 4 x 100mm spacing. The offset would be the bigger problem though.
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it that RWD offsets are fairly low, but FWD offsets are fairly high, meaning they push the rim further out? This is why some people use rims with higher offsets to clear the extra width of brake upgrades.

Les,
Frank is right there are 2 main 4 stud spacings for the bolt pattern.
Offset is your biggest killer. Different cars need a different offset and as your rim width increases the offset you need also changes. You really need to got to somewhere that knows there stuff and have a good chat about what is required.
At 7.5 inches wides Max's rims are probably not legal ! But Damn they look good !

Les,
The RTA web site is here
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/
Do a search for "wheels and tyres" And read the information sheet 09. It outlines all the limitations (And there are 3 main ones)
You fail to meet any of the requirements and not only can your car be defected but you insurance company can void your insurance.
Keep in mind that some tyre and wheel places will have the sale in mind rather than your best interests. Hope that helps,

Check your mail Les.
Okay, offset is basically the distance from the hub to the inside of the wheel? I dont know if thats right...look at the picture in your mail to make it clearer, I just can't quite explain it because I still dont understand it properly.

biggest rims you can chuck on the celica legally are 17x8.5s *I THINK* i know 8.5 is the widest you can go, but to get that wide you're gonna need wheel flares (as you can have your wheels poking ouside the body of your car)

Okay, I'll tell you. Legally, probably not, but most of their bigger wheels aren't legal. Physically, yes. Just make sure you trial fit them before you pay for them. There is no point in buying something later only to find out its gonna screw up!

I would be careful with wheel size. I have a set of 15x7 which ain't really that large.. But recently got defected for them being .5 inch too wide. If I had 15x6.5 I would have been ok.
So I'm actually going to get rid of these rims and purchase some legal ones to save myself future headaches.

I will be in a 1 - 2 months time. Have to decide what new wheels to get and also I might be changing diffs so depending on stud pattern from that etc.. But yeah for the record they are ROH reflex. Good condition, few scratches as they are 3 years old but nothing too serious.

Yeah, I'm more interested just for the fact they fit and the fact they are 15" (cheaper tyres in the right sizes)

Here in WA you are not supposed to go wider than one inch over standard width wise. And you're not allowed to go a total over 7" unless it came that was from manufacturer. That so sucks.

in NSW you cant go more than 2" wider than the largest the car came optioned from the factory with that means for the RA65, which had a 14x6.5" option (which I have) you should be able to go up to 8.5" (which incidentally wont fit on the car)

Hey dude, I had no idea what my car looked like before I bought it. I just saw the paper, went cool, Celica, $2200. Then I went to work. Then my mum and her boyfriend came and picked me up that evening in my car.
Are your wheels 14"??

I like the pop-ups too. I have the front of an SA63 sitting around the side of my house, waiting for me to fix a small kink in the bonnet and put it on
