Gearbox info Tue, 17 December 2002 14:02 Go to next message
I know these questions have been asked before but i'm asking again!
Whats the average price of a W58 box at an importer?
What engines/cars do these come off? And how do you actually tell a W58 from everything else by just looking at it?
I dont want to go to an importer and ask for a 58 and have them say yeah sure mate take this one! And then get it home to find out I have been completly ripped off!

Thanks

ok w58's vary a fair bit - typically because some importers don't know how to identify them.

typical price range is $450-850.

w58 came to aus in the ma61 supra, but is typically found in the jap import yard attached to 1ggte's (not 1ggze's)

rumor is that all w58's haver the steel sandwich plate, and the w55/57 has the alloy one, but BEWARE - there is also 2 commercial versions - the w56 & w59 - these may have steel sandwich plates as well (the ratios in these boxes are ideal for 4x4's - very low 1st etc - no good in a performance car)

best way to tell for sure? put in in 1st and turn the input shaft and count the output shaft revolutions, then do the same with it in 5th (3.2 1st, ~.79 5th)

Re: Gearbox info Mon, 23 December 2002 13:35 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Is there any real difference between the boxes on the following models?
82-98 Supra (5M-GE, 7M-GE, 2JZ-GE)
and
86 Supra/Soarer/Cressida (1G-GTE)

The importer that I might be getting the halfcut off may not have a 1G-GTE in stock at the time so i'm just looking into different options!
Its very difficult because no one seems to know what you are talking about when you ask for a W58 box!

The 2JZ-GE box will be slightly stronger than the rest (bigger input shaft bearing), but AFAIK the others are pretty much the same.
