1985 Cressida 5M-GE to a 1JZGTE Engine Sun, 07 August 2005 16:22 Go to next message
Hi everyone I'm new but I'm extremely eager to get my Car back on the road I am no mechanic which is a pain being I have to pay for labour that I could do myself if I knew how! Anyways I have a 1985 toyota Cressida GLX-i with a 2.8L inline 6 cyl 5M-GE engine that had the rocket seals replaced to figure out why my compression test was backwards to the norm. After the rockets were replaced it seemed the cam seals were perished and the cam rings and cams are gone due to the oil getting in them. The Engine is pretty gone now so i've been looking at converting the car to have a 1JZGTE Engine installed a "Soarer JZZ30 2.5GT-T Twin Turbo" to be exact. I've been told this is a popular conversion nowadays and it takes little trouble (apart from the normal) to allow the car to use it. it has ECU which seems to be cool cos my car already had that with the 5M-GE although because the 5M was a 3 speed auto and this new engine is a manual I am getting an extra 4 speed auto gearbox to suit it. was wondering what kind of advice you could give this rooky!

what are you talking about Confused

as for ecu's, again i don't know what you are saying, but the 1j will need to run the 1j ecu.

This appears to be a revolutionary new engine you have fitted in your Cressida. I say screw the 1JZ, keep the rockets and cam rings!!

Seriously though, my advice is to start by googling "internal combustion engine" and read as much as you can.

Hmmm, are you planning on doing this conversion yourself or paying someone to do it? Confused

Anyway your Cressida is very similar to the MA61 Supra in the engine bay, and lots of people here have done JZ conversions in MA61's so you'll find all the info you need if you search.

OK to start with punctuation is a wonderful thing! Ever heard of paragraphs? ...

This is a new paragraph it makes things much easier to read and understand Cool

Right, well this engine will have the wrong sump position on it (it will have a mid-rear sump as opposed to the front sump you will need). It is possible to change sumps, but front sumps are quite rare, sought after and hence expensive. If possible search around for a JZX81 or JZX90 halfcut, these will have front sumps Smile

You will need to use all the engine management electrics that come with the engine (you existing 5mge ECU etc will be useless). This is why getting a front cut is usually the best option.

And a finial word of warning, if you aren't able to do the mechanical work yourself expect to spend a very large amount of money to get it going (say $10K +).

Cheers
Wilbo

10K????? why the heck so much I was told by the dealer it was an easy conversion the engine comes as a package. This is how it's read:

Car Model: Toyota Soarer JZZ30 1991-1999
Engine Model Code: 1JZ-GTE
Engine Info: 2.5L, 6 Cyl, DOHC 24 valve, Twin Turbo
Drive: RWD
Gearbox: 5 Speed Manual (price is without gearbox and front differential)
Turbo: Toyota CT twin turbo
Power: 280ps/206kW @ 6200rpm
Torque: 363Nm @ 5600rpm

and comes with:
Alternator:
Air-con compressor:
CAS:
Coil(s):
ECU:
Engine:
Exhaust Manifold:
Intake Manifold:
Loom:
MAP Sensor:
Power Steering Pump:
Starter:
Turbo(s):
4 speed auto gearbox:

Why is it soo much to swap the engines around?

ahhh I read the other post on the same question.

Well I am officially a sucker for listening to carpart dealers saying it's a low cost conversion that's popular. ahh well as I dont have 10K I only have about 2.2K for the engine package would getting the 5M-GE engine reconstructed be ok I dont want to get rid of the car it's in perfect condition except for the engine yet I dont have much to buy a new car except for the 2.2K What would you guys suggest!?!?

engine, transmission, engine mounts, intercooler, wiring, exhaust, engine seals, plugs, oil, filters, brakes, radiator, fans, trans cooler, tailshaft, engineering, miscellaneous.

not to mention cost of labour which will be the real killer as you cant do it yourself.

Engine conversions are expensive. You might not understand why it would be so expensive, but those of us who have actually been there and done that understand all too well. Remember it's not just a case of bolting in the engine - you also need to upgrade the drivetrain, brakes, suspension, cooling system, electricals... the list goes on and it adds up quickly.

My advice is this: engine conversions in almost cases are not worth it if you can't do the work yourself. The labour costs are horrific and you could very easily be out of pocket a lot more than $10k, depending how much the workshop wants to gouge you.

If you just want a turbo car you might be better off just buying one. Unless you have a very good reason to stick with the Cressida this will be so much easier and cheaper to get the same result.

Front differential???? wtf?? this aint no AWD.

Anyway, that aside, you still need to buy

A front sump and mounts - $350-$500

a gearbox - $400 there for auto.

an intercooler, muffler, catalytic converter, full exhuast, intercooler piping. - $2000-$2500 there

Get someone to wire it up if you don't do it yourself - $600+

Fluids, plugs, filters, timing belt, maybe waterpump - $300-$600 there.

Engineering -$500

Maybe bigger brakes for engineering - $700

You'll need an LSD otherwise car will be useless in the wet - $500

You'll need good tyres if you don't already - $400

Radiator service - $100

The list is endless.
These are just a couple of things off the top of my head, Rob has mentioned more.

Start the conversion and you will soon work out that it all adds up Smile

Roughly off the top of my head...(don't quote me on prices, I said roughly Smile)

*engine mounts $300
*engine mount rubbers (may not be needed)
*oil/fluids filters etc $200 +
*exhuast / intercooler / piping $2000
*wiring $500 +
*driveshaft $300
*PS lines $200
*radiator clean / recore / thermos $400
*fuel pump $150
*airfilter piping / modifications require to fit air box etc $150
*timing belt, rear main seal, gearbox seals etc (preventative stuff) $200
*clutch, pressure plate $500
*flywheel $150
*flywheel bolts
*clutch line, slave, master cyl
*clutch pedal, smaller brake pedal
*front sump $300

and the killer for you my friend
*labor @ ~$50 per hour Wink (I'd suspect anywhere from $3000? (I have no idea!) -> 1 billion dollars)

I'll let you add it up Smile There is much more to the conversion than just 'bolting it in and putting a tank of petrol in it' Smile

I'd suggest you find a running 5mge to put in after you have added up the expected costs Smile Maybe try and find some friends to help you such that you can learn and one day perhaps consider the 1JZ option when you can do most of the labor...(even then it still won;t be as cheap as what you envisage).

Cheers
Wilbo

thanks for the replies just means I'll have to get off my ass and looking into that mechanics apprenticeship a little faster it also sux that I only have an auto licence although for a guess would the ar even get anything without a good condition engine(it still drives and has no problem starting or anything just has oil leaks and not much guts). What would be a nice "beginners" turbo car for the guy that wants reliability aswell as not going broke?

A 7MGTE conversion will be a lot cheaper.

But don't expect it to work out much less than 5grand.

the other reason I wanted to keep the Cressy is cos I have "dragged" on freeways and highways many other cars of it's age up till about 91's where both me and the opponent have flat footed the suckers and even with the oil leaks and cams being rooted I've whooped their buts now it not real possible being it failed it's compression tests by alot but something about the car makes it run extremely well even with the problems. I've heard that the 7M series like blowing their heads is that true?

You want to keep the Cressida because you think it's fast? There are many cars that will easily outrun a Cressida but will cost a lot less than a 1JZ swap.

no you misunderstand...or I wrote it badly(probably the latter), I meant that even with the engine rooted the performance is awsome as far as rooted engines go. It seems to be able to pull it's weight without a hassle(except a little smoke when going up real steep hills) even when it's on it's last legs. I want to keep it cos it impresses me that something that would normal make the car die in the butt isn't killing (performance wise) the car as much as you would think.

Why wouldn't the apprenticeship get your close you gotta start from somewhere and having a trade gives nice pay! beats the crumby $12 an hour I get! plus in the time it would take me to finish the course I may have the 10K to get it done......but I'll probably just settle for a nice supra by then

and doing this on your Auto P's??

fuckwit....

maybe you should learn to drive a manual before getting a high powered car.... then again, if you only take out yourself, it may be better for the gene pool Razz heh heh

sorry to sound harsh, but A) you have no idea, and B) you say you are not a responsible driver.... noice one bruv.. fooly hektik bruv
