buy em off forums from about $500 www.boostcruising.com
be careful because some of em have bad parts and repairs (if needed) can cost more than the bike.

hey lads
where do you guys ride em? (nothing wrong with the bedroom i spose)
but seriously, don't you have to have a big acreage or something?
I'm tempted to get one, but only coz im an apprentice mechanic and could work on it at work..

On the whole mechanical dodginess bit - you should be able to tell by looking at it if it's any good, or a "$50 chinese special" - Some of the worst welds I've ever seen have been on the frame of a pocket mini-bike ! ! ! ! ! Similarly, some brands/manufacturers get/use decent engines, some are total rubbish.
As for riding 'em, there's HEAPS of hire-kart tracks that are running regular mini-bike practice and race meets now that they're illegal for road use. Let your fingers do the walking and make a few calls - you may well be surprised at where you can run and for how much/little.
Speaking of finding places to take motorised toys . . . . I can't suggest whether it's valid/legal, but I'd love to put massively tall sprockets on my karts and take them to a banked bicycle veledrome . . . . . .
