1ggte boost questions Wed, 10 August 2005 23:54 Go to next message
Hows it going everyone,

started modding a mates gz20 as of late

gave it a service, installed boost gauge, aftermarket filter, that kind of stuff.

Now judging by the injectors we beleive it is a Gen 2 1g, and now with the boost gauge installed i have noticed 3 things:

a) first gear only boosts to ~5psi
b) total boost is under 9psi (closer to 7)
and
c) boost pressure drops from 7psi as the pedal is mashed to the floor and revs are in the high end.

any ideas as to whats going on?

Also, he has picked up a boost cut controller that will be installed today, will this rememedy the 5psi in first gear? With a simple manual boost controller installed, what sort of boost can be ran safely?? the car is internally stock with stock exhaust syetem, i've read 14.7psi is all the stock ecu will allow, but would the motor/turbo's handle this anyway? (searching appears to indicate yes)

Finally, with the boost increased to a safe level, are there anythings that should be more regually maintained to ensure nothing goes bang!

Thanks everyone heaps,
Ashlin.

First gear might not make full boost as it may not be under enough load.

The reason boost tails off up in the revs is because the turbos are struggling to maintain it because they are so small. They can do it, but they must be forced to do it (i.e. good boost controller).

Mine only peaks at 7psi, but I've got a feeling my turbos and/or wastegates were swapped for Gen1 items. Around the 9psi mark is probably about right for a Gen2.

About 14.7psi, or just over 1 bar is about all I'd want to run. The turbos are just too small. I'd probably upgrade the exhaust system first to make the turbos life a little easier before you go winding the boost pressure up to that level.

Unless it's an electronic boost controller or the like, I don't see it remedying its lack of full boost in first.

As for maintenance, my schedule wouldn't change, I always change my oil and filter every 5000km, make sure my coolant is always to the level and full of Toyota red.

one correction, it's a version 1 so it should be infact making 7psi Smile are there any internal diferences between the diferent 1g?

Gen1 will be around the 7psi mark yes Smile There are minor internal differences, but more variances rather than major improvements etc.

Have a spare set of turbos sitting around, you'll probably kill gen1 turbos since they are getting quite old now, especially if you start forcing them to do anything over about 9psi Smile

gen2 turbos will hold up better, as will gen3's. Or you could just go single turbs.

well, we have installed the boost cut controller we have noticed two things afterr taking it for a brap,

for starters first gear will rise to about 7psi, also we saw a max of arounds 9psi (once) and a steady 8psi at about 120-130km/h,

what year did the gen 1's come in? this is stamped as a 1988 which i figured would have had a gen2, though the injectors and ecu are yellow.

If it is a Gen2 it will have an air/air intercooler. Gen1's had a water/air.

ahh then it's a gen 2, I thought the gen 1s were wta

this is quite weird then, why would it have yellow injectors? is it the colour of the injector or the plug?

It's normal, those "guides" to what gen they are don't mean much. Toyota do odd things all the time with anything electrical.

Not really weird. Think of the Gen2 as a Gen1 with no water/air intercooler and wastegates with slightly higher tension on them. My Gen2 has yellow injector and ECU plugs also.
