Hey All,
Question to people with knowledge with the 5M-E can it run on ULP all the time or does it have to stay with the LRP?

Your 5M-E will run happily on ULP. In fact any Japanese engine since the mid 70's has been built to run on unleaded fuel.

What modifications/timing information do you have to make the engine compatible... In the manual it says the car needs to run at 98 RON and there is no petrol avaliable in Australia...
It would be greatly apprechiated...

Is it true that the Japanese had abolished leaded fuel by the early 80's anyway? Thats why all Japanese cars of the era can run unleaded?
Hehe, requires 98RON? Its not exactly tuned on...or anywhere near its edge to require that does it? Mind you, my 21R-C Celica only gets 98RON fuel (BP) but was designed to cope with 89RON hahahahahaha!

Japan had abolished lead in their fuel by the mid 70's, as had the US and much of Europe. We were way behind in this regard!
My 5M-E used to be fine with 91 RON fuel... they have a pretty low compression ratio. The 6M-GE pings a bit on regular ULP so I run the high octane rocket fuel now.

The 5ME has an 8.5:1 comp ratio. This low comp motor will run just fine with regular ULP, although if it had been previously tuned to run on leaded, you may find that you have to retard the timing slightly (generally a couple of degrees). The valve seats are hardened steel so they will be able to cope with the lack of lead lubrication from ULP. Cheers Dave.

hate to be a spoilsport but 5 ME 's generally run better/last longer running leaded/lrp, and there is also the small issue that running ulp, it doesnt have a cat it just pumps out benzine all day which is great for driver/world being a class 1 carcinogen and all altough i said this on another post i felt it was more releveant here, the engines made to run ulp come with a cat, ie the MA 45, LRP is like 95-96 octane anyway why would you want to use ulp? if you use standard ulp it will not cut it it will ping, have less power and generally be sh*t. they run good on optimax but better on lrp

How is an 8.5:1 compression engine going to ping on 91 octane fuel? Even Commodore V6's (tuned for 91 RON) have a higher CR than this, and that's with an ancient iron-head engine!
Like I said, my 5M-E was run exclusively on ULP and it never even looked like pinging, even on hot days. Even my 6M-GE will run OK on ULP 90% of the time, and it has a 9.4:1 CR!

I have a 4M with 9.2:1 comp...no pinging on regular ULP. It however is pre Japan ULP so doesn't have the hardened valve seats therefore every third tank is a leaded tank. My point is, no pinging at all, no change in performance that I can detect...all subjective of course.

BTW BUNNY: the CAT on the MA45 stuffed! (that was the most restrictive exahust arrrrrg!!!)
I personaly would not put LRP in any car its the CRAPPYEST fuel around if your car is leaded you can bet the rest of the engine will be wooted before any effects of PULP/ULP will show up better yet put the sucker on LPG 5M's LOVE IT! as do most toyota engines i have seen LPG fited too then as i have done on my 5m disconnect the vac advance and wind on as much advance as the slot in the dizzy allows

I aggree with Allan I would not even put LRP in my mower , I have been reconditioning cylinder heads for some time now and have seen the damage that LRP does to the valves and seats , I always advise people to only use PULP which will increase power and fuel economy , It is true that unleded fuel runs a lot hotter than leaded fuel which can damage your valves and seats , but you can not get leaded fuel anymore , And what I have seen this LRP seems to run even hotter and do more damage than PULP !
