NSW: number plate storage & retrieval

Has anyone in NSW who had the original "One-off" payment personalised plates put them in storage at the RTA & got them back out since these plates started attaching a yearly fee?
If I sell my Caldina before the Subaru is ready to be registered, I don't want to be hit with the yearly fee if I have to temporarily have the RTA store them.
Cheers

yup place them in storage pay the fee (one off about $30p/a) then come and collect therm when you are ready and away you go. no new annual fee..
ive done this with two sets of plates and have not had issue... HOWEVER if the car runs out of rego then you renew it (even if by a day) then you will attract the yearly fee forever
the other day when regoing one of the mr2's i asked about getting my custom plate AAA-11A style remade as it is starting to look a little sad and sorry from stone chips etc and as long as i want it remade in the same style ie: no colour change or layout change then its a one off $50 and away i go no new annual fee.

you have 3 months to put the plates in storage if the car runs out of rego, before attracting the new fees. Same amount of time you have to get a pink slip for a car.

Cheers guys, I was a bit worried that the Caldina might sell before the Subie is ready for the plates, so its a bit of a relief.
I shot an email off to the RTA last night anyway, so we'll see what the official answer is & I'll psot it up.

are you sure about the three months ? as we had the red mr2 run out of rego whilst it was laid up getting painted and couldnt get rego done. and we had to put the plates in storage and get new ones in the lapse time else it would have attracted the fee.

toof, I for one am absolutely certain about the three months 'grace' period. My farm ute rego is due on September 25 each year, but I never remember to renew it (it doesn't go on the road all that often ).
I have lost track of the number of times I have been to the motor registry on Christmas eve (ie, Sept 25 + 3 months) to get it renewed before it lapses completely.
The RTA always sends a reminder letter sometime after Sept 25 which very clearly spells out the 3 month period, among other things.
As to wagonists question, I think it would be bloody rude of the RTA to start charging annual fees in such circumstances (although that may not necessarily stop them ), as you entered a contract on the basis of no fees. Allowing that contract to lapse would enable them to change the conditions upon renewal, which others above pointed out seems to be the case.

yeah you get 3 months to re-rego it without having to get a blue slip. but when we looked into it if it lapsed by a day then it lapsed the existing lease on the plates and hence when it was re-rego'd it would have to be on the new scheme. hence new price
id either get the plates in storage and get some others it isnt exactly expensive or have it very sure in writing from the rta if you intended on letting it lapse.

You mean lapsed by a day or lapsed by 3 months and a day?
My other ute has 'custom' plates (just standard format, but my choice of letters/numbers) which would be subject to the annual fee if ordered today.
This year it was renewed 2 weeks late (but within the 3 months), and no extra fees applied.
There seems to be some inconsistency here - if the rego lapses, then you go onto the fee system, but if you cancel it (ie, put the plates into storage) then you stay on the old system?
It will be interesting to hear the official RTA line on this (assuming wagonist gets a reply )
Edit: Wagonist, you don't have to wait till the Subies rego is due to transfer the plates to it, just shift them across, hand the old ones in and fill out the form (and pay the one-off fee...)

the line i got from the rta was.. say my rego is due on 1st august.
renew <= 1st Aug. no problems
renew > 1st Aug get hit with annual fee - just need pink slip
renew > 1st Nov get with with annual fee - need blue slip.
we had to renew about a fortnight atfter the given date and were advised by the rta to place the plates into sotrage and get other plates issues until i renewed the rego.

Hmmm ... sounds like what they advised and what they do (or what they did In my case) are different
Just goes to show with the RTA (and and other monstrous bureaucracy), if you don't like the answer you get, ask someone else. If/when you get the answer you want, write down the name of the person you spoke to and the date as proof in the inevitable battle that will ensue down the track

exactly. ive never got a *straight* answer from them...
wagon: unless you have it explicitly in writing from them id get some other plates to be on the safe side. put new plates on the caldina and put your customs in storage. just a safe bet.

I had this issues this year, my good car took a hit in novemeber I got the letters to renew the rego and plates. i'm sure that if i let thatrego lapse to get the plates again I would attract the fee.
The plates where transfered to my shitter and are now about to be placed in storage all without the new fees.
