Hey guys, just curious to see if anyone knows, is it illegal to have 2 tyres with different tread patterns on the rear of a RWD car? I always thought the tread patterns had to be the same on either both fronts or both backs? Is it true that it doesnt matter on the back? Thanks for your help!
Probably best to find something in writing from the RTA as I suspect a phone call to 3 different people at the RTA on this issue would yield 3 different answers.
I rarely have the same type of tread tyres on the front and rear and have been pulled over for vehicle inspections on a number of occassions, they have never even questioned me about it (not to say it's right or wrong they may just lack observation skills?).
EDIT: just to clarify my post, I always have a matching set on the front and a matching set on the rear. As indicated below, different tyres from side to side is not good for obvious reasons.
Dunno if its illegal or not but its not such a good idea when it comes to handling balance. Different tread front to rear is ok, but side to side is a little bit of a no-no.
iirc there is a rule that tyres on the same axle must be on the same construction and tread pattern but dont quote me on it, i know there is the rule written on the rta site so do a search and you should find it
