Engine oil cooler and transmission oil cooler? Tue, 16 August 2005 13:09 Go to next message
Hi all. Just wondering if there would be any problem with fitting a transmission oil cooler as an engine oil cooler? I see these massive trans coolers on ebay all the time that aren't that expensive.

As far as i can see, they should both work in exactly the same way but there might be something im missing out on. Any opinions would be appreciated. Cheers.

Eddie.

Most engine oil coolers I've seen have tended to be a higher flow design. More open or even just a series of tubes. There are exceptions of course that are like a radiator.

Trans coolers are usually like a radiator in design being a series of tubes/fins. Of course there are exceptions like some original equipment designs that run through the radiatior tanks.

The Trans runs very hot so any reduction in temp is good thats why it doesn't worry it to run through 100c water. But external designs would be better for cooling. But engine oil should be running at a certain temp.

no - trans coolers don't flow enough (trans fluid is like water compared to engine oil) - you'll run out of oil pressure doing something important and kill the engine if you try to use a trannie cooler for engine oil cooling.

get a proper engine oil cooler, remote-filter & thermostat if your engine needs it.

then again, the majority of engine oil coolers (from factory, ie 4AG etc) are bypass design, so they don't need as much flow potential..
althought it's a worse way of doing it, a trans cooler may be ok for that application...

what do you boys think?? full flow is better and a nice serck/setrab etc cooler will be bees knees, but for a simple bypass cooler replacement?
