Carbie problem? Thu, 18 August 2005 06:48 Go to next message
i got a 4af. every now and then when i go to start it, it wont kick over, for up to like 10secs of throttle play. one it finally does, it chockes and blows smoke. ive never had a mechanical problem with the car, and it was in my family since new.

my diagnostic is a flooding carbie. sytoms apart from this slow start, which only happens wen warm and off for a few minutes, is a slightly high idle. would this high idle be causing more fuel to fill the carbie wen on idol, then neccesary, so that wen i turn the car off it causes it to flood? then the tough start, could this be cause its flooded and 'drowning'? i notice once it finally turns over and i back on and off the throttle, it back fires, (i think), but that might be a leak ive had for a while jus emphasized... Razz
happened to me a few times in the last few weeks. how would i fix this? jus lower the idol? do i do that whilst the engine is running or off, then check, then off, then check? etc.

thanks in advance guys,
jason

I think it's more likely an ignition problem. Mine does similar when warm and has been left for 10 minutes or so, although it actually starts, just cranks for longer before it starts.
Mind you I know my timing's good, so I suspect the coil or leads...

i duno man, cause i got sum fat sh*t leads and they are pretty new. i think the coil is okay to, from wat i know, its pretty new.

one other thing, wen i turn the ignition off, it shudders whilst it shuts off, like a gentle stall almost. could i have a dirty carbie? maybe sum carbie cleaner. and i think a fuel filter at sum stage?

ill find out exactly wen the leads and coil where replaced and work accordingly...

thanks dale

Shudders as in runs on for a couple of seconds after you switch off the key? I've had that a couple of times...
Carby cleaner would be worth a try, as would fuel filter if it hasn't been done in a while. Though I've covered both of those bases with mine.

Check the throttle body on the carby for the other thing, mine gets stuck on slightly so has to be adjusted accordingly to compensate.

the fuel filter im not sure about, so ill do that to be sure. but the carbie i cleaned about 11months ago, so i will do that. and ill get a new air filter.
sorta like a process of elimination, ill know wat its not if these dont fix it. Razz

thanks for ur help again dude.
