claryfiying 5k specs Thu, 18 August 2005 10:19 Go to next message
i have searched over and over for the right info but couldnt come across wat i needed... have a few points id like to clear up, im builing a 5k with various mods and need to kno a few things before i dive in the deep end.

the engine is to be reasonably worked
- twin 40mm doce webbers
- performance crow cam
- mild head work
- extractors
- electric dizzy

as far as i know 5k's have hydraulic lifters but solid lifters would better suit the application?

5k's have dished pistons? if flat top pistons were obtained could a worked 4k head be used?

just how much compression is too much compression?

basically im after all the info to get the best performance out of the little girl and any help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

that depends on rpm. some ppl use hydraulics but up high they may pump up... if you go solid you need a lightweiht option, not just lockign the original lifters

yes. yes. no real difference in ports, but free higher compression (after pistons).. a 3k head could also be used if hogged out a bit. 3K CCV=33mls, 4K CCV=36mls

that depends on your cam. it's dynamic compression that is important..

with the combustion chamber mods on my head (see my page), and camtech 609 cam (435 lift, 231/235@50thou) i had 10.2CR, but i think i could get away wth 11 befor epinging.. less duration = less compression (required) Wink

ok ive furthered my research with total engine services in kirawee (sydney) and have compiled a list of work to be done:

-camshaft (crow cams)
-solid lifters
-worked 4k head
-flat top pistons
- double valve springs
-twin 40mm webbers
-extractors

what would the benifits be of using alloy push rods? and would 6mm stems on the valves be needed? or just overkill?

depends how high you want to rev the sucker...
if you get the lifters to the weight of a 4K's, then it should be happy to rev to 7000-7500.
for above that you will want to either lighten the lifter more, or lighten the valves. 6mm stem valves will reduce valve train weight and mean you can use lighter springs Wink same goes for alloy pushrods..
if you still have heavy lifters, i would not bother with alloy rods.. leave them till last, if at all..

basically, reduce moving weight and car will rev faster and higher for longer, and valvetrain is a big issue..
