ST162 gearbox hassles

I have an 87 ST162 SX with a 3SGE and i now have an ST gearbox it was ok for a while and just a few days ago it started shuddering a bit and a few nocking noises when shifting, i checked the oil and its fine.. and i got the CV joints changed (needed to) and it still does it... sorta the same symptoms of the old gearbox which had a fucked diff. Engine mount (firewall side) was apparently a bit buggered, but they said because its in a casing it cant move around so they said that wouldn't be causing it. i jacked the car up and put it in first gear and moved one wheel while having mum hold the other wheel, and there was play in it. which would indicate the diff AGAIN right?
Please help me out with any info guys...
The mounts are still a possibility and i need to do all front end bushes... but i dont think they would be maknig such a large noise...
thanks

I think the wheels are supposed to move (slightly) independently seeing as that's what diffs are for. Is it only shuddering when you are changing gears whilst moving, ie if you are standing still does it still shudder/knock when changing?
Also, does the frequency of the shudder change at all depending on speed of the vehicle, or revs of the engine?

it does a little when stopped but if i ride the clutch enough its fine, but its shifting to 2nd and 3rd that it does it mostly, seems to be less aggressive when the revs are higher.
4,000+
downgearing is fine, and when driving if i suddenly take my foot off the throttle it jerks back and forward a little bit.
hmmmm, it doesn't really sound correct that the gearbox can go from good to bad in 1 month without doing any burnouts or anything, and likewise with the mounts.... i dont understand

I wouldn't say that it's the diff that's causing the problem if it's doing it standing still. My gearstick tends to move back and forth a little bit in fourth when i put my foot on the accelerator and take it off (I think that's what a bad mount does cause my one is totally rooted now that I finally saw it yesterday).
You said you put in an ST gearbox, what exactly was changed over?
I can't tell if your problem is synchromesh related or selector related...but I'm not a gearbox smartass

Check your shifter - that's what's wrong with Claytons (although his box is a little sad too!), just the bushes on the end of the cable are worn out, and it regularly plays silly buggers. Then again, maybe you and those damned FWD boxes just aren't MEANT to get along well...

yea, shinny claytons box is stuffed compared to mine, from what you have told me.
the shifter is a bit funny in the way it sorta wacks a bit when im changing but that is coming from inside the car not the big noise coming from inside the engine bay.
btw. those guys at toyospares most likely just didn't have an extra mount so they try'd to say it was the box more than the mount.
