hi, i'm looking at buying a Mark IV Supra at the end of next year, now because of insurance i'm thinking i'll just go the naturally aspirated model. It Still has the 2jz-gte in it, however i'm wondering if i can then just wack on a turbo, intercooler, ect to this engine?? Basically is the NA 2jz-gte a turbo 2jz without the turbo?? Whats the differance??

The NA Supra runs a 2jzge not a GTE.... have a look at the engine codes in the articles section of this site for further explanation.
While essentially they are the same engine, the NA version will run much higher compression and would not be suitable for turbocharging.... well not as simply as simply bolting one on.
If your going to 'wack on a turbo' anyway your insurance would be more than simply buying the turbo model to start with. A factory turbo should be cheaper to insure than an aftermarket installation.

Hey Mate,
To answer your question the engine from the naturally aspirated supra engine is actually called the 2jz-ge i believe. As many people can probably tell you from personal experiences the NA MKIV supras go very quick. If you want to go the turbo option you are much better off buying the RZ supra with the twin turbo as i believe that if you wish to turbo the NA engine you will need to find a stronger gearbox and these are hard to find and expensive. Someone please correct me if im wrong.
Russ.
PS - nice choice in car Pete!

Go to supraforums.com . All the Yanks are doing NA-T, with some very impressive results. That said, your insurance will still be sky high/unattainable and you'll have paid an incredible amount to get the turbo on.
Just buy the TT for starters.

about the gearbox.. the 2jz-ge w58 gearbox could handle a turbo onj, as long as you're not planning on running high boost (just have a look at my mk2, paul's, and norbies when it's running)
and yeah, have a, look at the above posts. it'll be cheaper to buy a turbo, and cheaper to insure.
if you're going to be a naughty boy and not tell the insurance company about the turbo, you'll still be forking out big $$$ for the turbo conversion, probably better to just pay the higher insurance on the twin turbo to begin with
