Almost any Jap engine will run quite happily on unleaded fuel. All variants of the 22R have hardened valve seats, so they don't require lead in the fuel.

My GF was saying when she did try unleaded it sounded like it was pinging, but now that its a different engine I was wondering what it should be.

If it pings on regular unleaded, you'll have to run it on premium. PULP is about the same octane as leaded used to be, but regular ULP is signifiantly lower (91 vs 95).
