FWD Hub Nuts Tue, 04 June 2002 15:47 Go to next message
Can anyone offer any advice as to why my drivers side hub nut keeps coming loose. It's done it twice now.

Do I just need to torque it up some more or is something rooted?

Would Loctite help?

AE92 100kw engine, box, drive shafts and hubs.

Thanks,

have you got the cap and cotter-pin inserted? I cant really see how it could be coming loose if you do... how tight are you torquing the nut?

Cap and split pin are installed. Don't reckon I'd have a drivers side wheel (or car more than likely) if I hadn't put em on. The nut is coming loose inside the cap if that makes any sense.

Torque? Big ratchet, big socket, big breaker bar. Kept tightening until I thought it was tight enough. Sad

You should really be tightening to the correct torque. I have it listed at home if you need it, but any Corolla service manual should have it.

Check the threads of the stub axle (CV joint) and see if they are worn or streached.

Invest in a torque wrench. best $90 you can spend if you do a lot of work on your own car!

Craig.

If you have the "correct" nut retainer and split pin on, there is no way the nut will come loose!

Hi
I would seriously strip that hub down and see whats causing the problem. I have seen the drive flange getting chewed up where it contacts the bearing inner race or the bearing its self getting worn. If the nut is locked its not magically coming loose, there has to be something wearing inside to be causing it to come loose. Do it sooner rather than later.Best of luck
Corey

Haggis: I'll borrow a torque wrench tomorrow. I have the torque settings here somewhere... The thread on the stub axle looks fine... as do the splines.

Cool1: I assume Toyota fit the "correct" nut retainer and split pin from the factory? I can assure you, it's coming loose...

Xauterus: I've had a good look at the hub and bearing and nothing seems worn. I took it off the road as soon as it happened. It's probably had about 30 mins worth of easy driving with it loose.

I pretty sure I just didn't torque it up enough now. I'll torque it properly tomorrow and let you all know how it goes in a few days.

Many thanks to all of you for the advice... Don't know where I'd be without Toymods...

P.S. Loctite? Good? Bad? Useless? What sort?

I really cant understand how the nut can come loose without spreading the fins on the retainer! Even if you only did the nut finger tite, the retainer should stop the nut from spinning!

Make sure the fins are pressed against the flat edges of the nut!

I'll double check the retainer as thats a really good point. Bear in mind it's only coming loose about 1/8 of a turn or less. There seems to be a small amount of slack in the retainer when installed? What do Toyota want for new retainers?

Thanks for the advice...

I dont think a retainer would cost very much. You could just get a second hand one from the wreckers!
