I thought 4age was either MAP or MAS sensored? Usually the TPS is for aftermarket system, or it's to sense the throttle position to turn the air cond off..

Nah the 4A-GE actually runs a proper variable resistor type TPs, rather than a simple switch type. It uses this in conjustion with the MAP sensor.
I can't see how it could run without any type of TPS, have a look at it if you can, check out the ECU, the throttle body & the wiring.
See if anything else has been changed. Find out how it runs too.

I believe the TPS on the 2TG is basically used only as a throttle switch, showing throttle closed, flat out, or somewhere inbetween, but not variable between either extremity, so it probably doesnt serve as important a role.
TPS is generally used for functions such as closed loop, and fuel cut on deceleration, so your car 'should' still run fairly well without it connected, unless the ECU has a "limp home" mode where it runs a very basic map when it recognises that a sensor is not there or disconnected, in which case it wont perform too well.
Hope that makes sense
