Has anyone ever swapped a 3S-GTE into a 89-93 Toyota pickup? Mon, 23 December 2002 17:07 Go to next message
I thought I'd ask you folks if anyone down under has performaed the swap. My major concern is where (in the world) can I find a bellhousing for the stock pickup tranny that will mate to the 3S block.

Any other details, or an e-mail addy of someone who has done a swap like this would be appreciated.

Oops, I expect that would help.

The truck is a 90 2wd model with the 22R motor in it. The transmission is the factory 5 speed.

I would expectn it to be a W5* box? In this case the 1S or 2S bellhousing will bolt up!
The problem with the 1S/2S housing is that it puts the starter under the turbo! There is a place in N/Z that sells these bellhousings modified with the starter on the drivers side! They cost about $200NZ!

But first you really need to figure out what box you have!

I'd say your box is a W5x...

Do a search for "RWD 3S" or something simiilar. This topc has been covered many, many times over...

It's not an easy swap...

Could also be a G52 or an L50. Check the ID plate in the engine bay to be sure.

I have a 1990 4wd toyota hilux (pickup) it has a g52 box.
Today is the first time on this forum and it's freaky, I came on to find out about doing a 3s gte swap into a hilux (though mine's a four wheel drive) I'll be very interested in this thread!
I have found that the 82 supra gearbox bellhousing will bolt straight to the hilux(pickup) g52 gearbox and therefore the 3sgte will fit up. Everything else will go with some amount of work.
This guy has put an inline six Toyota motor, not quite what you are after but the bellhousing info will be useful.

The 1S/2S bellhousing will bolt onto a W58 box which will then bolt to the 3S-GTE!
But remember that the bellhousing needs shortening!

So.....3sgte to 1s/2s housing to w58/g52 box, I'm sure I read somewhere on these forums that a w58 will bolt up to 3sgte, I think I have been on the net too long, my head hurts! Razz

1C bellhouse should sit to S-series motor and to W-series box.
Try to find info...

When you say the bellhousing needs shortening, where is that done, eg front face, cut and shut, rear face?

It just needs a bit machined off! Both ends would be the best in my opinion to keep the strength! I think about 15mm needs to be taken off!

From what I understand, the 2S bellhousing locates the starter right where the turbo assembly sits. That's not a good thing! Someone told me that a company in New Zealand makes a bellhousing that relocates the starter to the intake manifold side. Does anyone know of this company?

Also, I am not familiar with the 2S. What vehicles did it come in? I'm going to need motor mounts, flywheel, and a few other odds and ends from a 2S equipped car, but I have no idea where to source them, since I'm a US fellow. I DO have the capability to import stuff from Japan, or Australia. Anyone have any ideas?

From what I have read in these forums, the company is http://www.fraser.co.nz, I couldn't find anything about the bellhousings, might be worth a call or email.
Did you find out which box you have?

Fraser is the right company to get the bellhousing from! They take the 1S/2S housing and shorten it and also relocate the starter to the inlet side!
Give them a call and speak to Neil!
