Daily Driver Recommendation

Hey all,
I am currently considering selling my celica, and buying something newer, cheaper, far less cool and reliable for day to day (read: point a to point b AND back again) type driving.
Doesn't have to be a toyota, and can even be a girly type car, not really fussed. Just something i wont have to spend any money on apart from fuel, and with the price of petrol these days, as little fuel as possible.
Hopefully the money saved can go towards something more track orientated.
Any suggestions people?

Sorry, probably the question was a bit too open ended.
Maybe looking to spend between 8-12k if the car has a decent resale value. If not, maybe looking for a car that has already depceciated enough, in the range of 5-8k.
Doesn't need to be anything fancy, just something smooth and confortable to drive, efficient and reliable, or for my budget am i dreaming?
Thanks again

echo can be had in the 8-12K bracket. My brother got his nearing two years ago for $13,500 with 3500km on board, was used by toyota for displays in shopping centres. Hasn't had a problem and has done close to 50,000km in the time his had it.
Doesn't use a drop of oil or any other fluid and runs on the sniff of an oily rag.

mirage's are cheap but cost a fuckload to insure, insurance on the echo is like 800 bucks. Barina's are fairly cheap and are cheaper again on the insurance.
Look around at the used echos trust me there are plenty around going below 12K.
Just be wary any befor 2001 don't come with power steering and aircon as standard.

its not toyota but i drove arround one of those 3cylinder 1ltr dihatsu charade when i crashed my car and was really impressed at how fuel ecenomical car they are. Being very small and simple they go ok and they dont weigh anything... You can also park them anywhere and as an added bonus if you want to give it a little poke you can put in a 1ltr turbo motor...
Another car i have been considering as a daily is a swift GTI as they seem to be arround the 3-4k for a cleanish one.. and i could get 3rd party fire+theft pretty easy and i wouldnt be too fussed if someone pinched it.
i know these arent new cars but if you were to buy another car they are definatley affordable

I was just thinking it would probably be rev a little lower and be a little more stable, and the fuel economy difference wouldn't be that different. Depends on what size you want i guess.
