1jz power steering cavitating? Wed, 24 August 2005 09:39 Go to next message
Hey guys, my 1jz cress (jzx-81) power steering pump is making some horrible noises.

On a cold day, when started, it will make a rattling high pitched noise as if a bearing is gone. i pulled the pump apart and everything seems fine, bearing feels like new, there is only a tiny amount of pitting where it seems to have run dry for a second, but doesnt seem possible for those tiny marks to make that amount of noise.

Also, sometimes when getting closer to full lock (underground carparks are good for this) the pump seems to cavitate.

Everything inside looks fine, seals, shafts, faces etc all look nice and shiny.

Could my rack be fusked and be causing the fluid to get air in it or something?

Cheers,

Troy

I know the Factory Cressida power steering runs a restrictor to limit the flow... (and stop cavitation) - did you make sure this was included when your swap was done ???

Thanks Southo....Hmm...I used the entire JZX cut in my swap, including the speed adjusting (sensitive?) steering and lines...so if it was meant to be there from the factory, it's been used.
I would have gone right ahead and bought a second hand pump, so lucky i pulled it apart to check inside....anyone else have any insightful knowledge on these things?
