Trim Paint !! Tue, 24 December 2002 12:04 Go to next message
"Trim paint", suprisingly, is really good !!!

Spray it on and ur trim really turns out good ! Just make sure u wash and prepsol before spraying (in the sun preferably)!

We actually found an RA65 with perfect interior (black) and ripped it out and had to trim pait some of the parts we could not get... turneed out nice ! Very Happy

I recommend the "dye" type trim paint

Motospray also make a range of trim paints.

A distinction needs to be made between trim paints that are in effect dyes and other paints that are enamel based.

In cars they use different types of plastics and finishes and the dye types will come off them like an thin layer of ash. For a quick guide:

ABS plastic - you can use a vinyl dye or trim dye type paint as the paint will penetrate this type of plastic

PP (Polypropolene) platic - you will need to use a flexible primer or flexible additive in the paint you use so that it will stick to the plastic and also bend with the plastic. You could use like a hobby paint but that will be expensive and it is hard to find them in semi gloss.

The good thing about Toyotas is that they mark the plastic components in most cases with what type of plastic they are made from.

Oh yeah, Les is right about using Prepsol - really makes the plastic 'sticky' for the paint

i prefer thinners, and maybe then a splash of prepsol.
Prepsol just doesnt get out 25 years worth of finger oil, grease and general grime like thinners does! Very Happy

And Craig took my idea, VHT colour dye.... but it doesnt work rather well, but even preparation and excessive cleanliness is required.

im with Karl as well with the thinners talk.

worked a treat for me

Incidently speaking to a motor trimmer, he reckons the VHT brand is cheap and nasty, then tried to sell me a $40 can of paint (average spray can size)... i said i'd get back to him on that one and went out and bought some VHT, and my center console painted up nicely.

Yeah but some surfaces like to get that melted look after some thinners. So I used a strong mix of sugar soap to get out/off the grim! Then hit it with Prepsol (which you can get from any automotive paint shop).

Cheers
