Unusual Headlight Drama

G'day guys Ive got a strange problems with the headlights on my 68 crown. It has dual lights like the early celicas so I'm hoping one of you guys might of had it before.
What is happening is that when I put on high beam my left low beam light goes out and the left high beam doesn't come on at all. Both right lights are working as they should and the left low beam works as it should when on low beam.
To my knowledge the low beam and high beam circuits are separate so isn't it impossible for the low beam light to go out when high beam is selected???
Any thoughts would be appreciated
thanks Stitt

I dont know what the Crowns are like but the Celicas have: 2 highs and 1 low on either side! Normally when you turn the high beams on the lows turn off!

Yeah man, the lights with the low beams have 2 different elements in it, one for high & one for low. So when you switch to high this globe switches over plus the inner lights cme on.
That's why the inner high beam only lights have a 2 wire plug & the outers have 3 wires, 1 for high beam, 1 for low beam & 1 for earth.
So it's just a bodge connection somewhere to that side of the high beam.

yeah, Cool1 is right, when the high is on the low goes out, so looks like you have a blown bulb.. or check the connection/wires of the high beam of the left light for corrosion, shorts, open circuit..
pull the bulb out, check light bulb, and if it's not blown, get a volt meter, check the voltage of the high beam connector in reference to ground, if no voltage, trace the wire down until you find any power, that way you'll find where the open circuit is..

Thanks to every one that replied.
The problem was a faulty Fuse for the left side high beam.
That's what I thought was wrong but my dad confused me with the way he thought the lights worked. his way it wasn't the fuse.

With my Celica i had a problem, when lights were on normal the left side light did not work, when i put it on to high beam the left side started working but one on the right side would then turn off,
fault being a had a blown low beam filament on the left side and a blown high beam filiment on the right side.
