Remote start?

Hi,
I just recently looked into getting a remote srtart for my soarer and was quoted like $400. I thought it would have just been a couple of relays controlled by and auxillary output from my immobiliser/allarm. Was this an extreem quote? Does anyone know of how about to go this or a link to find more information about this topic? I tried google but there is nothing really on there.
Thanks everyone!

I'm trying to think of a situation where remote start would be useful. Hmmm.... nope.
$400 doesn't seem that bad though.

hehe when isnt it useful. Just before ready to leave( couple minutes before your out the door) hit the key fob, car starts up and warms out as your getting your shit together.
Call me lazy lol.

see thats what i thought. But on an auto it seems that it is legal but on manual no it isnt. But then again that could have just been the alarm guy trying to sell me something.

Can't vouch for other states, but here in WA you aren't allowed to leave a running car unattended. I'd assume other states have similar laws.

*shrug* I don't actually have a turbo timer... but I can think of situations where it would be helpful.. especially for someone like me who's always running late.

I have remote start.... its handy in winter, you can prewarm your car before u jump in and freeze your nuts of...plus it has the gay feature of tripping people out when u start the car and no one is in it....
$400 is a good price...but, and if u can wire it up your self even cheaper...

Hi,
Jaycar used to sell a car alarm which was able to start the car. It cost $270 if i can remember off the top of my head... The alarm itself cost me like $300 to get wired, but bloody strathfield wouldn't do the remote start. My local auto electrician charged me $75 to just wire it up.
Nowadays, pager alarms that can start the car from a k away, and that come with a turbo timer cost $130 on ebay. Plus i'm getting the auto electrician to install it for $350
Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure it is illegal to have a remote start, as is a turbo timer, in NSW anyway. It's even illegal to leave your car unlocked over here, running or not.
If its a manual, be VERY careful where you leave your gearshift. I've had the problem of the car jumping away from me a couple of times, and trust me its not pretty.

You can buy a remote start alarm on ebay for about 90 bucks or even less, if you can wire a car stereo you can fit a car alarm. Theres a heap of cheap chinese import stuff on there.

apparently it's handy in japans north when it is -20 outside..
you leave the heater set to ON, turn the car on from your window, then hopefully it's only 0 by the time you jump in so your hands don't stick to the seatbelt metal bits....
seriously....

Yeah, my import had a remote start alarm, and it was good to warm the engine up in the morning so i can race to work straight away cos im always late, plus it also doubled as a turbo timer for cooldown.
By the way, a properly installed unit will not start when the car is in gear, and yes they are illegal.

Yes in QLD i know you can only put them on auto's so they can't start in gear. Both these and turbo timers are able to be used ONLY if your sitting in the car when you use them (hence leaving a car unattended running), but that would mean that when i jump out of the car to run upstairs to get something its illegal too.
