How far out can the offset be?

Sorry about all the wheel questions.
I rang up some tyre places about putting 17's on my ra65 but they are pretty expensive and the range isnt very good.
I asked what the offset was and they reckon +27. Can anyone confirm this? Also how far either side can I go of this number? I am looking at importing some from Japan and want to be very sure they will fit before buying. Is +35 front and rear to big? What kind of spacers will I be looking at. To stop these questions how do you guys calculate what spacer you need and the amount you can go either side of the offset?

offset can only be out a certain amount, and then the tyre (not rim) will hit on the strut or guard..
it depends on many things..
how much car is lowered, how wide rims are, how fat the tyre sits on the rim etc etc...
i can't help with actual sizes, but a good bet is to find someone running the exact tyre you want to run, ie width, profile and brand, on the same width rim.. fit it on the car and then measure how much space you have.. and calculate what you can fit...

where is crUZsida's offset pic???
Yes offset will need to vary with wheel width as ts all about how far the wheel goes into the car (as anything more then about +20 - +25 on my soarer will rub the front suspension. i wouldn't go into spacers for the simple fact that they are illegal (well the are here) and in 9 out of 10 cases your studs won't be long enough.
this is probably a good place to have a play and try to under stand what its all about
http://marksink.com/tire_wheel_offset/offset.html
just buy some nice dish
Also don't mess with offset understand it and try wheels before you buy, as it cost me around 100 bucks to learn the true meaning behind offset, as i couldn't get what i paid for the wheels back.

Its stange how everyone things spacers are illegal. I rang a couple of tyre places on friday and they are legal provided they are engineered. Got a quote of $300 for some to be made up.
After a bit of reasearch and some carefull measuring I found out I should be right going with around 27+ or under on a 7" wide wheel with 205's for tyres.
Thanks for the link ndgcpr it was a great help. If anyone can see fault with my above thinking make sure you post up or you can confirm it .

Now, try ringing engineers and see how many of them are willing to engineer a car with spacers.

spacers are illegal.
hub adaptors, where it bolts securely to the hub, and has a different set of studs to hold the wheel.. can be engineered..
but it sems like a bit of a headfuck when you can just buy wheels with te right ofset, and not risk the whole shebang coming apart when you least want it (ie cornering hard)..
just buy the right wheels
LOL as Yian said, ring engineers and tell them the tyre place said spacers are engineerable...
