Just wondering if any designers out can help put in some advice/input. I've started creating a website after having used any tools after many years since I left the industry.
any key pointers will help to help this failed designer out

Well firstly you should write down what you want the website to represent and what features, information and technology you want to use.
then figure out how you want to design the layout of the website with pictures etc.
The way i did this was to get a A4 page of paper and draw what you want
have you used css with another websites before?
makes text much more viewable and makes the layout of the website better.
are you using just html, or php, asp dhtml?

The only time I ever like them is when I'm going to a site to see how pretty it is. Which is never (these days anyway).
I have one on my site, but this is due to the damned web master not letting you use an index.php page as the index page *shakes fist*
