i have, and recommend, Ricoh R2 camera..
zoom goes down to 28mm so it has wider angle than most. macro function is really good.. pic quality is great..
only bitch is that you can't use it as a data transport/USB flash memory device (like some others can).. the PC interface only lets you download photos..
oh, and battery life is fantastic.... they are about 35,000 yen atm, and spare batteries around 2500 yen
as for shots?? umm.... well.. they are good
most cameras have good quality pics nowadays, so it'S more about the ease of use... the ricoh has less electronic function than others, but that makes it easier to use.. and the wide angle means you fit more in a shot.

Go here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp
And input what you need from the camera. It will find cameras that match your criteria as well as reviews (which contain very detailed sample photos).
Once you narrow it down to a few cameras, you can do the side by side comparison etc, etc, etc.
Very handy site.

Do you guys get a decent Fstop and various focus options? I'm looking at getting something with those kinda... semi-professional options. I guess I should go play with some at a store.

350D comes with plenty and you can download a patch which unlocks all the ones that are on the 20D as it uses the same architecture at the 350D. Just wait if your gonna get one now though cos they are supposed to come down in price soon as another new model is gettign realised.

Unless you want an SLR to use its manual festures, dont get one.
It all depends what kind of control you want to have over taking the pictures. Most of the high end compact digitals like the canon ixus 700 still have a manual function, but are great if you want something compact. And it also comes back to how much money you want to spend.

Where can I get this patch? The 10D and the 300D shared the same architecture, but I don't think the 350D and 20D did, as they have different sensors.

the 10d is a vastly different camera to the 300d as is the 20d/350d
there is a firmware floating around to give the 350 faster film speed, and some of the custom options the 10/20d has. however firmware cant exactly change the physical differences. ie: different optics and chasis.

At least the 10D and 300D shared the same sensor. No such luck with the 20D and 350D, they are far more different. ISO6400 would be something very handy for me, and unlocking some extra AF points, but thats about all I need.

Too small and too light. Especially when you've got a heavy lens on it.
Same with the Nikon D50.
I suppose that's why the new lenses made for DSLRs are all plastic.

I have an S1 Pro. Big professional body.
I lugged that with a large (I think it's 72mm) 24-120 lens around Sydney for a day without even a shoulder strap!!
I was a bit sore afterward... But wouldn't trade it for one of those baby plastic SLRs.

Perhaps invest in a monopod? Especially if you're taking photos at 300mm... Comes in handy.

I agree. I bought the 10D over the 300D bacause it had a metal body. The extra weight tends to steady your hand a bit too. Plus, the sheer weight of it always lets you know its there, and I find I tend to be more aware of it, and would certainly know if someone was trying to pinch it.
Anyway, quality comes at a price, and thats big, heavy cameras.

I dont have any pics handy, but ill get them off the other computer if you want.
but i have a fujifilm finepix s3500
this is an awesome camera.
the only thing i dont like is indoors, unless the lights are bright enough (i.e. really bright) you need to use flash, or you get blurry pcs.
but i didnt buy mine for taking pics indoors anyway.
bought mine for $350 from KMart minus My staff discount.
i thoroughly recommend it
oh yeah, and the s5500 is everything this camera is, and more!
i bought mine for $474 for the camera, and a 1GB memory card, which is good for 950+ pics on the 4 mega pixel mode. the camera also has 6x optical zoom, which is fkn huge!
0.3 MP mode is good for somewhere in the vicinity of 3500 pics, insane!

I've got a F717 and I can take multiple snaps but only 3 in a row.
Some pics I've taken with the 717

I've been told for DSLR's, go for a Canon because they have better quality lenses and compatability.

Yeah true, the F-717 has a function that allows you to take 3 in quick succession.
I suppose a lot of cameras have it but something else it has is night vision and night focus which is really nifty.
Cheers, Greg.
