MZ21 Drift...

Hi first time post here,
I've been looking at the forums for a while now and have a few questions.
First of all I will be getting my P's in a few months and because I live in NSW I cannot drive turbo cars. So I was wondering whether there is a n/a MZ21? and whether this has enough power for drift?
I was also wanting to know what a good genuine price would be for a clean standard MZ21?
I'm also interested in a Sprinter, but pricing is much to high for what it is worth, in my opinion.
Also are there any Australian Soarer specific forums?
Thanks..

yes there is a MZ20 NA soarer, but i am unsure if there is a MZ20. Actually its a GZ20 (GZ's are better anyway ) with a NA 2L 6 cyc in it. i had the motor in my Z10 and it had no torque then so i have doubt as to its ability to drift in a z20, but anything is possible, also the NA will most prob come with an open diff not a LSD. will probably cost about 4-5G
soarer forums are at http://soarercentral.com/cgi-bin/sc-forum/discus.c gi but are really biased towards Z30's and after a bit of talking we managed to get a Z10/20 section put up but for most of the oldschool action here is the best place i have found

what model soarer is that in the pic?
do you think a stock soarer non turbo with some suspension work would be able to drift?

I dont think there ever was an NA *z20 soarer, they were either 1g-gte's or 7m-gte's. gz20 and mz20 being the difference in engine, and the 1 on the end instead of the 0 eg. mz21 was the luxury model, so more options and more weight, not what u'd want for drift.
Also if u wanted to still get one u'd really want a manual for drift, unfortunatly most were auto's from factory 95% of all produced so u'll have trouble finding a manual one, thats been unmodified and still in good condidtion.
Your best bet is to grab urself and old RWD corolla, reliable, cheap, legal on P's and u can start modding that. That should allow you to save more $$ and then invest in a nice soarer by the time ur off your P's. + the skill in driving u will gain over the time of your p's in essentail to handeling a drifter. Not all fun and games when 1 mistake can mean your life or the life of your car.
in all seriousness dude, grab a RWD corolla (ae71's are a nice choice) and learn and have fun in it. the soarers will still be around when u get off your p's.

Yes this shape soarer came out with the 1GEU and the 1GGEU both 2Litre engines in non-turbo form.
I have seen a few 1GGEU powered GZ20 soarers for sale on this forum over the years.

My friend has a GZ20 with a 1G-GEU NA model in SA. It came in it stock, but i have heard its a slug. He is wanting to sell it from memory if your interested. as finding an NA one will be rare. As will be a Z10 i am fairly sure.

Shame no one is building a super track-only JZZ10...
Oh and BTW That Matt's GZ20 drifting is massively photoshopped, he's actually polugh-understeering through a kindergarten playground at recess.
Quite well done really. almost looks believable.

Yeah agreed soarers are hard enough to drift with all that weight, and all of this talk of it being NA will not help either. I would also go the old RWD corolla setup if it were me. but it is possible...

Simple, yes. Crude, quite possibly. Somewhat effective with decent suspension, indeed. Not having all that weight to lug around, BEFORE you start stripping it...priceless

Don't get me wrong, I have an appreciation for Soarers, but I don't like the general tubbiness of the Z2 and the Z1 is...just a little bit...you know

You will need to uber strip the car tell you what, the interior really isnt that heavy, rear seat <10kg. Front electronic seat will be the most weight reduction but neglibile difference between the leather and cloth, everyone says the leather weighs more......i dont think so!
it would be a real stuggle to get a z2 down anywhere near 1150kg id think unless its track use only, but im pretty sure thats what you want anyway.

There is a 1G-GE powered GZ-20 here in Newcastle. It got imported ages ago and has just sat around unregistered. It's a factory 5 speed so it will have a close ratio W57 and LSD. Its a neat car, totally stock. I would buy it just to have 2 factory 5 speed GZ-20's if I shaved off a few more brain cells and didn't already have too many cars.
