Converting from FWD to RWD.

What is involved to convert from front to rear-wheel-drive? The engine in question is a 4AGZE, and I'm looking to install it into my MK1 Ford Escort. Would this be a job for the home mechanic, or would I be better off getting it done professionally?
Thanks in advance.

Pretty much the intake and exhaust manifold, everything else is pretty much about clearance issues, and modifying the loom (well it depends where exactly you're planning to put your ecu!)
You're escort efi yet?

Is there any problems as far as engine mounts go?
Nah, the Escort's basically stock at the moment, it's my long-term project.

I think the engine mounts can be made, but it's better to get them done professionally!

Your biggest problem with putting the engine into the escort will be the engine mounts, if you plan on getting the thing engineered you'll have to do a damn good job of them, i'd recommend getting them made professionally. Everything else will be quite simple and you should be able to do it yourself. This includes wiring, remounting alternator, intercooler, custom piping etc.. Do a search and you should find plenty of info on gze conversions.

Cheers for that, I'm looking at getting the mounts done properly along with the gearbox tunnel, and doing the rest myself. I'll keep posted on how it turns out.

What about the dizzy? It might the back of the motor which will get in the way with the firewall. Depends on which 4age variant you're starting with!

only a 20V engine has the dizzy out the back of the head, no 4agze has.

Uhh. . . ur rear suspension is gonna be a problem id imagine, Uv somehow gotta find room for a diff back there, not to mention driveshafts joints and the extras. . .
Are we talking about going form a front wheel drive car, to a rear wheel drive car? Has it been done before on an escort? This sounds like a big big project dood.

Clearences around the firewall and steering rack will be a slight concern. The wiring loom and all the rest should be fairly easyly done. The brake booster will need to go. Use a remote booster for that. This conversion has been done. Try a few of the Escort forums like
http://rs2000.mine.nu/site/home/frames.html or http://spannerfodder.com/phpBB2/index.php
The guys on here will be able to tell you everything you will need to do to fit it in.
