Changing diff ratio's Thu, 01 September 2005 04:35 Go to next message
I'm wanting to change the diff ratio in my MA61, because at the moment 1st gear is utterly useless, and freeway driving is a little unpleasant in 5th gear at over 3000 rpm.

I've done a bit of snooping and searching, and from what I gather I currently have 3.9 ratio, and I'd probably be best off going for something around the 3.5 ratio mark. Thanks to a few very helpful posts by toymodders, I've identified the diff code I need as being "F372".

This is out of the RA65 correct?
Is there any difference between the auto/manual?
Did any other cars come with this diff?
Can I just rip the crown/pinion out of the RA65 diff, and chuck it in my MA61 diff? No fiddling or fabricating - direct bolt in?

Thanks again fellas.

It comes out of an RA65, manual only. You might find it in a manual RT142 Corona as well, not sure though.

Yes it's a direct fit, but I strnogly recommend you get a diff shop to do it.

This is exactly what I did in my car a couple of years ago. You seem determined to learn stuff the hard way - why don't you just ask first? Laughing

I thought I was asking! Very Happy

I don't like to just ask a question without at least putting in a bit of research first. Besides, I always find you learn stuff better if you figure it out for yourself. That way when a problem comes up that hasn't been dealt with before, you're better equipped to figure the sucker out Smile

Norbie: why do you say to get a diff shop to do it? I don't know if it is harder in an IRS car but I thought it was pretty easy. Pull wheels off, pull brakes off, pull axles out, pull tailshaft off, undo diff bolts after draining fluid! and bob's your uncle. Smile

He's not just talking about swapping the whole diff, he's talking about fitting a different crown-wheel and all to the LSD centre.

Again... exactly what I wanted to hear Smile
Just picked up my manual RA65 diff about 45 mins ago. A little old and clunky, as to be expected, but should do the job. All the teeth on the crown gear felt like they were there. Was just a bit sticky to start turning, and a little sloppy in the play between left/right sides. It's been sitting on a shelf for the better part of 5 years, so it's not really surprising. The wrecker had no idea what it was Smile

To give you yet ANOTHER thing you wanted to hear, mine wasn't perfect, but with the careful attention given to it by my mechanic when he assembled the Truetrac into the centre, the whole thing is as tight as a nuns... Wink
